In a recent appearance on Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You, Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland and Rush star Jason Patric opened up about their love triangle with the Gloden Globe-winning actress, Julia Roberts.
The three of them have never turned away from questions related to this infamous triangle in different interviews. However, this is the first time when the two actors - and best friends - have come together to comment on the whole affair, which took place approximately 30 years ago.
First, little background on the story:
On June 14, 1991, the Pretty Woman actress, then 23, was set to marry her Flatliners co-star, Sutherland, who was 24 at the time.
The wedding was to take place on a Twentieth Century Fox sound stage decorated like a pastoral garden. Almost 150 guests had been invited to witness as the two stars would exchange their vows.
However, on the supposed wedding day, Roberts was spotted on a lunch date with Patric, also 24 at the time, and later accompanying him to Dublin, Ireland. At the same time, Sutherland was seen leaving the Hollywood Hills home he had been sharing with the actress. Their relationship didn’t last very long, and ended one year later.
Sutherland and Patic have reunited several times since what came to be known as “one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the 90’s,” and have worked together several times as well. They starred together in a Broadway revival of That Championship Season in 2011, and even joined their Lost Boys co-star, Corey Feldman, at a fan convention in 2019.
In the podcast episode that was released on Wednesday, April 27, Rosenbaum asked Patric, “Supposedly, you had a thing with Julia Roberts. You took off to somewhere. Where’d you go?”
While Patric fumbled with words while answering, “Well, I mean, that was all, that was all the press, I mean, the fact was,” Sutherland cut him off mid-way and whispers “Ireland.” Patric then continues and says, “Yeah, I went to Ireland.”
Sutherland did confess that it was “a difficult time” for him after his breakup, but adds that he thinks it was “an uncomfortable time” for Patric and Roberts too.
He also called Roberts an “extraordinary person,” and said that all has been long since forgiven - that there’s nothing you can do when you fall in love.
He continues to compare their love triangle with that of British musician, George Harrison, rock and blues guitarist and singer, Eric Clapton, and model and photographer, Pattie Boyd.
Harrison was married to Boyd, but to his surprise, Clapton was secretly writing songs for her ("Layla"), despite being the Beatle's best friend.
Sutherland admired how the two guys remained “best friends until the bitter end” despite falling for the same person. As per him, “I figure if they can deal with what they dealt with, we certainly can (deal with ours).”
All three of them have moved on from the whole infamous drama and continue to enjoy their different lives now.
