Releasing a movie always comes with a certain expectation of performing well at the box office. Some films are box office hits, others are total duds, and some simply come and go with no one noticing. It's always fascinating to see how things play out once the receipts start rolling in.

Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to the box office game. The star is known for his movies making a ton of money, but even he's not immune from a flop. In fact, one of his forgotten films from the '90s made less than $500,000 when it was in theaters.

Let's take a look back at this forgotten flick.

Leonardo DiCaprio Is A Legend

Modern movie stars are all vying to win major awards and conquer the box office with each new release. Getting to the top and staying there is exceptionally difficult, which is why many stars don't last. A great example of someone who has pulled this off successfully is Leonardo DiCaprio.

The star has been in the limelight for decades at this point, and he's still a premier star who people can't get enough of. DiCaprio was the perfect storm for Hollywood in the 1990s, and his ability to remain on top while many have fallen off is a testament to his talent and his star power.

These days, DiCaprio has seen and done it all, and yet, he's still looking to take his career to another level. Genuine movie stars are hard to come by these days, and Leo's career will hopefully inspire the next crop to do things bigger and better than he did.

Many factors have helped make Leonardo DiCaprio one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, including his ability to make a ton of money at the box office.

His Movies Normally Make A Fortune

To be a movie star, you need to be a draw, and Leonardo DiCaprio has proven time and time again that people will show up and watch his movies when they hit theaters.

According to The-Numbers, DiCaprio's films have combined to gross over $7 billion globally. Keep in mind that the star is not on board any massive franchise that guarantees to rake in crazy amount of money. Instead, he's steadily chipped away at this insane number over time.

Globally, Titanic remains Leo's biggest movie, having grossed over $2 billion. For years, it was the highest-grossing movie of all time, though that record has since fallen. Nevertheless, it remains the brightest feather in his cap, in terms of box office gross.

Outside of Titanic he's had plenty of other hits. Both Inception and The Revenant crossed the $500 million mark, and he's had 4 other films hit at least $300 million. Again, this has all been done without the benefit of a major franchise backing his films.

As impressive as it is to see the money he's made with his biggest hits, even the legendary DiCaprio has had his blunders at the box office.

'Total Eclipse' Made Less Than $500,000

So, which movie of Leo's made less than $500,000 at the box office. According to The-Numbers, it was a movie by the name of Total Eclipse, which was released back in 1995, shortly before he broke out with Titanic.

"Young, wild poet Arthur Rimbaud and his mentor Paul Verlaine engage in a fierce, forbidden romance while feeling the effects of a hellish artistic lifestyle," the film's logline reads.

The small project starred DiCaprio, David Thewlis, Romane Bohringer, and Dominique Blanc. That's s surprising amount of talent for such a small feature, but this did little to help with it with critics, who currently have it at a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film did feature DiCaprio in a same-sex romance, something he dished on in an interview.

"I don't have a problem with doing a film about a relationship of love with another man. That's just acting, you know what I mean? But as far as the kissing stuff, that's really hard for me, I'm not kidding. But I've faced the fact that I'm gonna have to do it, and I'm gonna do it because I supposedly loved the guy. But the movie isn't about homosexuality, although I'm sure that's what the press is gonna be all over," he said.

Though a lot of work was put into Total Eclipse, this movie was panned critically and was a dud commercially. Give it a watch if you want to see a young Leo giving a solid performance before becoming a global superstar.
