In the wake of her divorce from Tom Cruise, Holmes found herself at the epicenter of a vicious media storm, with millions around the world desperate for details about her divorce. In an audacious quest for independence, Holmes decided to relocate to New York. Here’s how this big move helped Katie Holmes survive the messy aftermath of her divorce from Tom Cruise.

Why Did Katie Holmes Move To New York?

Katie Holmes’ divorce from Tom Cruise received overwhelming media attention. The 43-year-old actress and her ex-husband chose to remain tight-lipped about their split, fueling endless speculation. As a result, Katie found herself being hounded by hordes of paparazzi at every turn. While relocating to a big city amid this bona fide media circus might have seemed ill-advised to some, the drastic move seems to have granted Holmes and her daughter, Suri, a much-needed fresh start.

In an interview with InStyle Katie recalled how welcoming New York residents were to her and her daughter. “So many people I didn't know became my friends and helped us out,” Katie disclosed.

The Logan Lucky star then recounted a heartwarming incident where a New York cab driver helped her out of a difficult situation with Suri. “Suri was 6 or 7, and she was spending the night at a friend's house while I was seeing the ballet at Lincoln Center,” she ventured.

“At 10 o'clock I got a call: "Mommy, can you come get me?" I got a cab and went down to Battery Park to pick her up. She was exhausted,” she continued. “She fell asleep on the way home, and when we pulled up to our building, the cab driver opened the door and helped me not wake her. He helped carry her to the building. He was so kind.”

What Katie Holmes Loves About New York

With her divorce from Tom Cruise in the rearview mirror, Katie finally got a chance to enjoy all the perks of living in a big city. Since 2012, Holmes has been living in a $12,500-a-month apartment in Chelsea, New York. Unfortunately, moving to the city has not completely shielded the prolific actor from negative publicity.

“Yes, it's a little too exposed at times,” she admitted to InStyle. “We work hard to maneuver and navigate. But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe.”

Despite the unending media attention, Katie and Suri are enjoying every minute of their new life in New York. In an interview with E! News, Holmes commented on their life in New York saying, "New York has been very good to both of us. I love the theater, the galleries in my neighborhood. Stuff [like] that is so much of what makes me love this city. I love the Knicks. I love talking to my neighbors in the elevator. I like feeling a part of something big."

Katie also delights in the immensity of activities New York has to offer. “When there are 25 things to do every night, it takes you out of your own thing… I'll take a class at Broadway Dance Center. I'll go to the Joyce Theater. I do hot yoga and boxing classes. I have a book club. The city has a lot to offer, and I use it.”

Katie Holmes Has Always Wanted To Live In New York

Katie Holmes’ love for New York started long before she decided to ditch Los Angeles for the big city. The 43-year-old Toledo native has always been fascinated with New York. In her interview with InStyle, Holmes confessed that she was already fantasizing about living in the Big Apple in junior high.

“We shot [in New York] for my first job, The Ice Storm, when I was a junior in high school, and they put my mom and me up at a hotel,” Katie admitted to InStyle. “I remember walking the city with my parents after dinner one night and thinking, 'I need an apartment here. I need to be here."'

Katie Holmes’ move to New York was undeniably motivated by the need to escape the chaotic aftermath of her divorce from Tom Cruise. However, given Katie’s fascination with the Big Apple, she was bound to move there eventually, albeit under different circumstances.
