In 2000, after six years of hiatus, he made his comeback with a role in Richard Nelson's play Madame Melville.

"When I stopped, I just thought it was over and I was never, ever going to do it again," he recalled, as reported by Time. "I was just hoping to disappear off the face of the earth. It took me about six years to figure out you can't back out of this."
