Mark Wahlberg Missed Out On A Few Notable Roles Throughout His Career

Turning down a J.J. Abrams film isn't something we are accustomed to. Mark Wahlberg might be part of a select few to do so, turning down the director's plan for Star Trek. Despite Mark's lack of interest, the 2009 film was a major success at the box office, making $385 million.

As for why the actor turned down the role, he revealed it was simply due to the fact that he could not understand the script.

"I remember (Abrams) asking me to play Captain Kirk's father in Star Trek, and I tried to read the script, and I just couldn't even... I didn't understand the words or the dialogue or anything. I said, 'I couldn't do this. I think you're really talented, but I couldn't do it.' Then I saw the movie, I was like, 'Holy s**t. He did a great job," Wahlberg recalls alongside the Toronto Sun.

The actor further revealed that if another opportunity came up, he would not pass on it. "I probably wouldn't pass up an opportunity to work with J.J. again, so if he wanted me to do something that I couldn't fully understand, I would probably give it a shot."

Although missing out on the project was a major blow, the actor went through a tougher experience trying to get his hands on a certain script.

Mark Wahlberg Lost It When He Didn't Get The Producer Rights To Fifty Shades Of Grey

Mark Wahlberg might not be the face fans typically think of when Fifty Shades of Grey comes to mind. However, he had huge plans for the film, trying to score a producer role behind the scenes. Mark saw the value and potential of the film and looking back, clearly, he wasn't wrong.

Mark was none too pleased when he lost out on the potential project, so much so that he almost ousted his entire team.

"I almost fired my agent Ari [Emanuel] over [Fifty Shades]—not because I wanted to play the part. We were aware of the book from very early on, and we were close to securing the rights, and then we get into this bidding war," he said.

"We were so close to having [it]. That was one of the few times I was going to fire Ari," he revealed alongside Hollywood Reporter's Producers Roundtable.

There must've been some sleepless nights for Wahlberg, as the film turned into a blockbuster.

Fifty Shades Of Grey Released Three Films That Made A Combined $1.3 Billion At The Box Office

Released in February of 2015, 2017 and 2018, Fifty Shades of Grey ultimately released a trilogy of films, following the success of the first film. In total, the film brought in $1.3 billion, making it among the elite films of the 2010s.

To think that author E.L. James came up with the concept for the novel innocently thanks to Twilight.

"I just sat on my sofa and just read them and read them and read them. I was inspired by ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer ... she just kind of flipped this switch in my head," James tells Insider.

She continued, "It was one of tens of thousands, really hundreds of thousands, of stories written by this vast community of women who were inspired to write and share stories by Twilight."

As they say, the rest is history and the novel went on to enjoy major success.
