At thirteen, Mark Wahlberg was an original member of New Kids On The Block but quit only a few months in. Six years later in 1990, he formed the Funky Bunch with dancers/rappers Hector Barros (aka Hector the Booty Inspector), Scott Ross (aka Scottie Gee), Anthony Thomas (aka Ashley Ace), and Terry Yancey (aka DJ-T) and their first album, Music for the People (produced by big bro Donnie) gave the world the #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and certified platinum single, “Good Vibrations.”

The rapper/partier with the OG attitude we knew as "Marky Mark" is a totally different person than the respected actor/husband/father we know today.

10 The Funky Bunch Fizzled Out in ‘93

In 1993, Marky received a Grammy-nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance for the band’s You Gotta Believe album, which did not do as well as the first. After the band members went their separate ways, instead of going solo, the hip- hop star partnered with Prince Ital Joes, a reggae musician and they released two albums in Europe. Their song “United” became a number one hit in Germany. He retired from the music business in 1998 to begin a career in acting, playing a singer in Rock Star.

9 He Modeled Calvin Klein Underwear

Before there was Justin Bieber and his tats posing in a pair of CK briefs, there was the ripped OG of underwear models: Marky Mark and his six-pack. The very successful ad campaign was shot by famed fashion photographer Herb Ritts, and one of the biggest supermodels of the '90s, Kate Moss, also appeared with the rapper in a number of print ads and television commercials. With a natural charm, his universal appeal attracted people, helping the company to experience exponential growth.

8 He Was Voted Worst Singer

The Funky Bunch’s first album may have been a runaway success but their sophomore effort was a flop with the readers of Rolling Stone voting Marky Mark the “Worst Singer of the Year, which was 1992. This disappointed was the catalyst for Wahlberg to pursue acting. He made his debut in the TV movie The Substitute, dropping the hip-hop moniker and making it clear he did not want to be called that ever again. His next film was Renaissance Man, and the rest is Hollywood history.

7 He Wrote A Memoir

Let’s define “wrote.” The 1992 book is a photo-bio with pictures by rock photographer Lynn Goldsmith and the photos are accompanied by running commentary contributed by the teen idol. In other words, it’s page after page (144 in all) of pictures that he says stuff about. To further add to his bad boy, hip-hop image, Marky Mark, dedicated the tome to his privates aka “the funkiest member of my ‘bunch’.” It’s described by readers as “funny” with the proviso to “keep it away from young ones” due to the foul language.

6 He Was Sued For Assault

It is widely known that during his pre-fame teen years Wahlberg was quite the handful, often getting into trouble with the law. Unfortunately, this behavior persisted for a while after stardom hit.

The story goes like this: A guy allegedly used a racist slur against the rapper’s black bodyguard and the superstar supposedly threw the man a rather severe beating. Marky Mark was arrested on assault and battery charges which were eventually dropped after the alleged victim reached a monetary out-of-court settlement with the musician.

5 He Was A Video Game

Like most celebs who shoot to fame, as soon as he got a taste of notoriety, it seemed like a good idea to capitalize on it. The rapper starred in a computer game, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video. It gave Mega CD owners the opportunity to edit their own music video starring the group. Gamer critics gave it a 0 out of 10, and it was ranked as one of the worst games ever made. Well, you can’t win ‘em all.

4 And A Workout Video

In 1993, one could do a solid exercise routine with The Marky Mark Workout: Form…Focus…Fitness. The 70-minute tape exits now only on VHS and sells used on Amazon for a whopping 57 bucks. The reviews—some of them recent, believe it or not—are all positive.

The general sentiment is that besides a good workout, one gets to look at the abs-for-days rapper’s muscular body. If anyone hasn’t noticed, even at almost 50, his physique is still an inspiration to get off the couch and put down the pie.

3 He Had A Signature Move

During live onstage performances, the buff hip-hop star would drop trou—offering a glimpse of his hot body as a parting gift to his concert-going fans. (He was ahead of his time on this front.) Shirtless was also his thing, with his black jeans slung low to begin with, and his tighty-whities peeking out above his waist. There was also the de rigueur backward baseball cap. The crotch grab was one he owned as well.

2 He Was An MTV Rock N’ Jock Regular

Beginning in 1991, MTV Rock N' Jock was a television series on the music network featuring actors, musicians, and other entertainers playing various sports and going up against professional athletes. Marky Mark joined in on the action and among his celebrity teammates was sometimes brother Donnie and stars like Will Smith. A few years ago, he revealed that during one appearance, he had a run-in with Leonardo DiCaprio that almost cost him his role in The Basketball Diaries. The rapper also performed during halftime, and yes, the pants dropped on the court, too.

1 He Left Quite A Legacy

He has been Mark Wahlberg—actor, family man, producer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur (he and his brothers started the hamburger chain Wahlburgers, which launched a reality show) longer than he was rapper Marky Mark, however, his alter-ego is still in our lexicon much to his family’s dismay. In fact, he revealed to People, that his kids are embarrassed by his rapper persona past. “I was at my son’s game, they start playing ‘Good Vibrations’. My wife [Rhea Dunham] is just cracking up laughing, my son’s basically burying his head in his helmet.”
