As it turns out, there is a reason for that, Maya's famous parents held her career back.

Who Are Maya Hawke's Famous Parents?

Unfortunately for everyone involved, Uma and Ethan's marriage ended when they divorced in 2005. Three years later, Ethan married Ryan Shawhughes which led to controversy since she was the nanny he and Uma employed to watch their kids.

On top of being Maya Hawke's parents, Ethan and Uma are both hugely successful. After all, Ethan and Uma have both enjoyed a great deal of success as movie stars.

During Uma's career, she has starred in lots of notable movies including Dangerous Liaisons, Batman & Robin, as well as Gattaca. However, Uma's greatest claims to fame are the movies she made with Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill series.

A massive star in his own right, Ethan has starred in so many classic movies that it is hard to even touch on a sampling here. That said, it could be argued that Hawke's most talked about films are the Before series, Reality Bites, Training Day, Boyhood, and The Black Phone.

On top of starring in a very long list of films, Ethan recently starred in the Disney+ series Moon Knight. As a result, Ethan is another example of a widely respected actor who has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Why Maya Hawke's Parents Initially Didn't Let Her Act

Just like Maya Hawke, Rumer Willis is the daughter of two movie stars, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. As a result of who Rumer's parents are, she started her acting career very early in life.

From the time that Rumer was 7 years old until she was in her late teens, she appeared in several of her parents' movies. Thanks to her parents, Rumer appeared in movies like Now and Then, Striptease, The Whole Nine Yards, and Hostage.

After Maya became a famous actor, she was interviewed by The Guardian in 2021. During that conversation, Maya was asked whether her famous parents, Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, supported her acting career.

Ultimately, Maya revealed that her mom and dad are very supportive of her career now. However, they were very cautious about their daughter becoming a professional actor when Maya was young.

"They were wary of the public life side of acting and the difficulties of that. They also tried to protect me from falling into acting. They wanted to ensure I had a strong enough backbone, my own passion for it and work ethic."

Of course, a lot of parents who care try their best to prepare their children for whatever career they want to have. However, most parents aren't in the position to give their children the opportunity to follow their dreams in an instant.

Considering how rich, famous, and successful Ethan and Uma are, they obviously could have gotten Maya Hawke roles in their films when she was young. However, unlike Rumer's parents, Maya's mom and dad refused to get her those opportunities.

"They didn't want to cart me along every red carpet or have me do bit-parts in their movies."

As an outsider looking in, it is easy to imagine a young Maya being outraged that her parents wouldn't give her the chance to become a child star. However, Uma and Ethan wanting to protect their daughter is admirable.

Tragically, far too many former child stars wind up going through huge struggles later on. With that in mind, is it any wonder that Ethan and Uma refused to expose Maya to Hollywood until she proved she wanted to act for the right reasons?
