Donald Trump will, arguably, go down in history as the most controversial president of the United States. Much has been reported about his time at the White House and his reluctance to accept his 2020 election loss. When it comes to his personal life, however, it seems people know more about his penchant for golf than his relationship with his wife, Melania.

The former first couple has been married for a little over 15 years after getting engaged in 2004. And while it’s been years since the couple had their glitzy wedding, there is still a lot of speculation surrounding Melania's wedding ring and why it may be seen as a ‘fake.’

Here’s What We Know About Melania’s Wedding Ring

Donald and Melania are known for their lavish lifestyle, from hosting extravagant parties to owning some of the most opulent homes in the country. And so when it came to their wedding, Donald certainly made sure that no expense was spared.

The couple’s $2.5-million Palm Beach wedding had a 350-person guest list, which included Billy Joel, Barbara Walters, Simon Cowell, Tony Bennett, Heidi Klum, Russell Simmons, Shaquille O’Neal, and even the Clintons. As expected, the reception was held at the Mar-a-Lago ballroom, which had just undergone a $42-million refurbishment. It also boasted of 24-karat gold moldings and marble flooring. Meanwhile, guests sipped on Cristal champagne as they enjoyed beef tenderloin and chocolate truffle cakes with Grand Marnier.

Melania, of course, stole the show as she looked incredible in her strapless Dior gown (reports indicate the dress cost a whopping $100,000) that has been embroidered with various pearls and crystals. At the same time, fans also can’t help but notice her wedding ring, which is a showstopper in itself.

Why Do People Think It’s Fake?

Melania’s wedding ring is said to have an estimated retail value of $685,000 today. And as expected, it is sparkly as can be. “I am confident that there are 25 stones in the band, each is one-carat emerald D Flawless,” Gary Ingram, who is the CEO of TheDiamondStore.co.uk, once told Express.co.uk.

The ring does look incredible, and it certainly matches a lot of Melania’s outfits. Nonetheless, it seems that the former first lady is often pictured without it (although she wore it when she had her official White House portrait taken). This may have led to unfounded suspicions that the ring is ‘fake.’ As it turns out, however, there is a more plausible explanation as to why Melania doesn’t wear her wedding ring too often.

“There are three reasons why she may not wear the ring in public,” Ingram explained. “Firstly, if it doesn’t sit comfortably next to her statement engagement ring. It is also a substantial ring that is worth a fortune, so it could alienate voters who feel she is flaunting her wealth. Or, Melania may not want her rings to be a focal point in the press, so she doesn’t wear it in public.”

This Isn’t The First Time That Melania’s Ring From Donald Has Come Under Scrutiny

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time that one of Melania’s rings has been the subject of controversy. Back in 2005, Donald famously claimed that he bought the emerald cut D-flawless diamond engagement ring he presented his future wife for a steal. The ring is said to be valued at $1.5 million but the former president claimed that he only paid half that price. “Only a fool would say, 'No thank you, I want to pay a million dollars more for a diamond,” Donald even remarked while speaking with The New York Times.

At the same time, Donald boasted that several other companies had been trying to cash in on the Trump label, even if that meant having smaller profit margins. “Literally anything you can imagine from photos to flowers to food to jets to airports to diamonds,” he explained. “And for every item, there's five people who want to do it. In all cases they don't want anything, but they want recognition.”

Later on, in 2018, Laurence Graff, the chairman of Graff Diamonds, revealed that “no favours” were extended to the former president, as Donald once claimed. “He paid for [the ring] in full, and he paid immediately,” a source had also told Forbes. In addition, Graff Diamonds CFO Nicolas Paine also told the publication, “We don’t sell items for publicity value.”

Despite the company’s refusal to accept Donald’s discount claims, it seems there remains no bad blood between the two parties. In fact, Donald later bought a second diamond ring from Graff. This time, it was a gift for Melania in celebration of the couple’s 10th wedding anniversary. This anniversary ring is said to be worth $3 million and just like with the engagement ring, Graff never offered a discount to the former president.
