In case you were wondering, the winner of the 2018 People's Choice Award for the Pumpkin Carving of the Year was not the 90 Day Fiancé-themed pumpkin shown below. Although a serious contender with 3,700 likes, the pumpkin, carved by Katya Hryniowski, ultimately lost the competition.
For those of you living under a rock, 90 Day Fiancé is a reality show on TLC that follows couples who have applied for or received a K-1 visa, which is available to foreign fiancés of US citizens. After the visa is issued, the couples have 90 days to set a date before the visa expires, meaning the foreign fiancé will have to leave the country.
Think Green Card, the 1990 rom-com starring Gérard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell, meets The Bachelor/Bachelorette. The 90 Day Fiancé pumpkin references one of the shows most notorious couples, Michael from Nigeria and Angela from the US. The mismatched couple had as much drama onscreen as they did off with Angela, 52, claiming that Michael, 30, had emptied her bank account. Meanwhile, Angela was arrested on September 2 in Montgomery County, Georgia and charged with driving under the influence, speeding and driving without a license.
The ill-fated couple, who met online, dated long distance before Angela traveled to Nigeria to meet the love of her life. What followed was worthy of a Daytime Emmy. Accusations of stealing and cheating, along with name calling and lots of will they/won’t they tie the knot. Needless to say that since the two appeared on the show, the Southern belle and her Nigerian prince seem to have gone their separate ways. Though Michael did send a shout out to Katya for carving his likeness.
The winner of the top prize at the 7th Annual People’s Choice Pumpkin Carving Competition, which was held on Instagram on Sunday October 21, was Katie Brecknock, who carved an amazing likeness of the late Anthony Bourdain. A record 112 people voted, and although the Michael and Angela pumpkin was a worthy contender, the Anthony Bourdain pumpkin rightly walked away with the award. Though you may not like the master chef’s take on the Pumpkin Spice Latte. “I would like to see the pumpkin spice craze drowned in its own blood,” he had to say about the fall drink.
