Even before Beyoncé was the global superstar she is now—with so much status that she can skip the prestigious Met Gala whenever she likes and still be one of the world’s most influential fashion icons—it seems that she had a similarly mesmerizing effect on the people she met and worked with.

In 2002, Beyoncé appeared alongside Mike Myers in the third installment of his successful Austin Powers series, entitled Austin Powers in Goldmember. In the film, Beyoncé played the role of Foxxy Cleopatra, an FBI agent and Austin’s love interest who helps him find and take down the villain Goldmember.

Mike Myers recently opened up about what it was like working with Beyoncé on the film. Unsurprisingly, he confirmed that everyone on the set had a positive reaction to her, even though she wasn’t yet an icon. He also admitted that he introduced her to a legendary band she hadn’t heard of at the time.

How The ‘Austin Powers’ Cast Responded To Beyoncé

Mike Myers revealed that everyone on the set “fell in love with her”, adding that his co-star Michael Caine loved Beyoncé too even though he wasn’t sure how to pronounce her name at the time. The British actor left off the é and “nobody wanted to correct him.”

Mike admitted that when he first met Beyoncé, he was sure she had something special that would turn her into a huge star. “The Obamas have it,” he elaborated. “They exude molecules that take the shape of their persona.”

In 2019, Fred Savage, who also had a role in the film, recalled a scene he had with Beyoncé, where Austin Powers is distracted by the mole that Fred’s character has on his face. They filmed the scene the day after the Grammy nominations were released, and Beyoncé was nominated with Destiny’s Child.

“…there was a big cake for her,” he reminisced (via Entertainment Weekly). “Everyone sang. It was crazy.”

The actor divulged that he met Beyoncé again years later in the most unlikely of places: his kids’ school in Los Angeles, where Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy also attends.

“It took me a while to go up to her,” he said. “At one point I was like, ‘Hey, I’m Fred, we did this movie together.’ She goes, ‘I know who you are. I saw you at the beginning of the year, I just didn’t want to come up and say hi and bother you.'”

In the same interview, Fred confirmed that Beyoncé and Jay-Z are “great parents” and “active parents”.

“… they’re at school, they’re out there having picnics, sitting out on the field with a blanket.”

The One Lesson Mike Myers Taught Beyoncé

While making Austin Powers in Goldmember, Mike Myers did pass along some pearls of wisdom to Beyoncé: he introduced her to the band Led Zeppelin.

“I don’t know this Led Zeppelin,” he recalled her telling him. However, after Mike had introduced her to the iconic band, Beyoncé began listening to them. A few days later on set, she pulled out her headphones and said to Mike, “It’s Led Zeppelin—they’re great.”

Beyoncé Originally Had Hesitations About Starring In ‘Austin Powers’

Beyoncé fans are in two camps when it comes to her performance as Foxxy Cleopatra. While some argue that Beyoncé totally embodied the role and did a brilliant job—especially considering she was only 21 at the time—others feel that the movie failed to be funny.

Beyoncé herself had hesitations about getting into acting as she wasn’t sure she was ready to dive into the world of films.

“I think it has to be something that you are born with, the ability to act,” she said (via Cheat Sheet). “Everybody that sings and performs can’t act. And I didn’t know if I could or not. That’s why I was scared to get into it, because sometimes you think, ‘OK, since I perform, and I’m a successful singer, then I can be a successful actress.’”

“But it’s not something that everyone has. Either you got it or you don’t, just like a voice or the ability to play basketball or whatever it is.”

However, when Beyoncé was offered the role of Foxxy Cleopatra, she couldn’t pass it up. Even though she was busy with her music career at the time, she felt called to explore her acting abilities too. There’s no denying her crazy work ethic!

“I’ve gotten scripts and some offers, but never anything as wonderful or as huge as Austin Powers,” she explained. “Really, I wasn’t planning on doing a movie anytime soon. But once they approached me with this, I couldn’t really pass it up. I had to.”

Beyoncé was actually supposed to be going on tour with Destiny’s Child and may not have had time in her schedule to make the film. However, the tour was postponed due to the tragedy of 9/11. So the timing ended up working out for Beyoncé to take on her first movie role.
