A Hong-Kong tycoon didn't just buy one, but two rare colored diamonds for his 7-year-old daughter at an auction in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015. He renamed them Josephine, after his daughter and paid a total of $77 million for both diamonds. The "Sweet Josephine" was bought by Joseph Lau, a 16.08-carat vivid pink diamond for $28.7 million (French). The second, a blue diamond, was sold for $48.4 million and is on this list below.

Joseph Lau is a property developer, and Forbes ranks his fortune at a whopping $9.9 billion. According to FOX, Lau is known for buying expensive and beautiful gems and diamonds for his children.

9 De Beers Millennium Jewel ($32 Million)

In 2016, a 10.1-carat vivid blue diamond was auctioned off in Hong Kong and hit the record books as the most expensive diamond after selling for almost $32 million. The De Beers Millennium Jewel 4 is the largest blue gem oval-cut Fancy Vivid blue diamond to ever appear at auction at the time.

This beautiful blue gem was part of the Millennium Jewels collection, which is made up of eleven blue diamonds. The gems also made headlines when they were part of an attempted multi-million dollar heist which failed.

8 The Zoe Diamond ($32.6 Million)

One of the most expensive colored diamonds is known as the Zoe Diamond, a 9.75-carat blue diamond that was auctioned off and sold at Sotheby's New York.

The diamond was sold for $32 million in November 2014, and purchased by Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau, who has a habit of buying diamonds and gems. Lau bought the stunning diamond for his daughter Zoe, who the diamond is named after.

This stunning orange diamond is the largest Fancy Vivid Orange diamond to ever be auctioned off. The 14.82-carat pear-shaped gem broke records when it was sold for over $35 million at Christie's Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale in 2013.

According to Forbes, the unique orange diamond also set a world record for price per carat for any colored diamond sold at auction at $2,398,151 per carat.

6 The Princie Diamond ($40 Million)

The Princie Diamond is a 34.65-carat fancy intense pink cushion-cut stone that was auctioned off and sold at Christie's in New York for $39.3 million in 2013.

At the time, the diamond was the most expensive jewel ever sold in the auction house's history and the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction in the U.S. The gorgeous pink diamond is the biggest of its kind and originated from the ancient diamond mines of Golconda, India.

5 The Graff Pink ($46.15 Million)

This extraordinary pink diamond was once owned by Harry Winston and belonged to his private collection, but was later auctioned off at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Sale in Geneva and sold to Laurence Graff for $46 million, making it one of the most expensive gems ever sold at auction.

The 24.78-carat Graff Pink diamond is extremely rare and Graff even had the diamond re-cut so the color went from intense to vivid and the clarity of the stone became flawless.

4 Blue Moon Of Josephine ($48.4 Million)

Hong Kong buyer Joseph Lau purchased the rare "Blue Moon Diamond" at Sotheby's for $48.4 million, setting yet another record for the most expensive gemstone sold at an auction.

The 12.03-carat cushion-shaped diamond was renamed "The Blue Moon Of Josephine" after his daughter. The same day, Lau purchased a vivid pink diamond for $28.7 million, shelling out a whopping $77 million for both gems.

3 Winston Pink Legacy ($50.66 Million)

Harry Winston's jeweler purchased this jaw-dropping pink diamond for a record $50.66 million at Christie's in Geneva in 2018. Renamed "The Winston Pink Legacy," the $2.6 million per carat ring set a world record price for a pink diamond and was once owned by the Oppenheimer family.

Jewel expert Francios Curiel called the diamond, "the Leonardo Da Vinci of diamonds."

2 Oppenheimer Blue ($57.5 Million)

The 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue emerald-cut diamond is the largest Fancy Vivid Blue diamond to ever be sold at auction and was bought for $57.5 million at Christie's in Geneva in 2016.

The stunning blue diamond ring was once owned by mining magnate Philip Oppenheimer and was properly named after him by the anonymous buyer.

1 CTF Pink Star ($71.2 Million)

In November 2018, the most expensive gemstone ever sold at auction and the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America was sold for $71.2 million in Sotheby's in Hong Kong.

Named the Pink Star, this stunning 59.60-carat oval mixed-cut Fancy Vivid Pink diamond was bought by renowned jeweler Chow Tai Fook.
