Everyone has a favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Plenty of fans have a long list of favorites. And of course, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about the MCU again this year.

But fans can't help but think that some MCU projects deserve more recognition than they've received. From 'Thor' to 'Iron Man 3,' there are some movies that fans realize aren't the biggest hits ever, but they are still worth watching (and re-watching).

From building up the plot to just showcasing some super cool tech, many Marvel films serve a purpose beyond pure entertainment and adrenaline.

Sure, everyone's all about those top ten best MCU flicks, and IMDb has no qualms about listing them out. But one that didn't make the cut was 'Captain America: The First Avenger,' say fans.

That comes straight from Rotten Tomatoes readers, MCU fans, and overall film enthusiasts. 'Captain America,' from 2011, earned an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but readers agreed with a critic/fan who noted that it just wasn't the "typical superhero movie."

The fact that the film was a humble origin story of "a good man becoming a great hero" was something that spoke to audiences, and it didn't take a bunch of fancy technology or aliens or anything other than, well, acting.

It's campy, yes, admits the critic, but Captain America's origin story is also an essential part of the MCU. It builds character history, it gets viewers invested in the rest of his plot involvement, and it helps make his final exit more memorable.

In short, 'Captain America: The First Avenger' had plenty of things going for it but without the pomp and circumstance of other, bigger, flashier MCU films.

It wasn't the most critically acclaimed project, but fans argue that the storytelling was golden and it was just enough in a franchise of often-overdone movies. There was some action, but it wasn't totally exaggerated, making this one more entertaining than the less convincing CGI of other Marvel projects.

It may seem strange, on the face of it, that fans would love 'Captain America' so much. But in truth, the more viewers dive into the plot and see how Cap is connected to the rest of the Marvel universe, it makes sense.

On the other hand, what Rotten Tomatoes calls the "greatest" MCU movie probably isn't that much of a surprise. At face value, the movie was a hit, but let's be honest -- it takes all kinds in the MCU. After all, what's the use of Marvel if not to incite controversy among superhero fans?
