A dog who lost her litter of pups has adopted an orphaned possum in Australia.

This is maybe the saddest story you’ll hear today--at least initially. Molly is a beagle who recently lost her litter of pups. 9News Melbourne doesn’t say exactly what took Molly’s pups away from her, so we’re left to imagine what horrible disease or deadly predator robbed her of being a new mom.

Owners Sara and Elle Moyle could see that Molly was devastated at the loss. She moped. She wandered aimlessly around the house, searching for something, anything to distract her from the terrible loss she suffered.

And then she found Poss.

Poss is a common brushtail possum, a species native to Australia. She was found by Molly abandoned by her mother, which is not an uncommon occurrence for possums during times of hardship.

Neither Sara nor Elle were present during the chance meeting. What we do know is that Molly showed up at the house with Poss on her back, wagging her tail and with a look that very clearly asked her humans if she could keep her new friend. And that’s how Poss got adopted.

“They've been inseparable ever since,” Elle told 9News. “It's certainly uplifted her mood, they both needed each other I think so it's been a fantastic relationship.”

The relationship mostly involves Poss riding shotgun on Molly’s back in much the same way that a baby possum would ride on the back of its mother. As a possum, Poss is nocturnal, and so spends most of her time sleeping in a tree on the Moyle’s property. When nightfall comes, Molly is there waiting for Poss to hitch a ride.

Brushtail possums are mostly herbivores, so Molly and her humans don’t really need to do much to feed Poss. Her diet mostly consists of leaves and foliage from their property, supplemented by the occasional bug.

They’re a very unlikely pair, but they found each other when they both were in desperate need of a connection. Poss might eventually wander off as possums are typically solitary creatures, but for now, they make a loveable and adorable team.
