Netflix has changed the movie industry with their original films, which have continued to dominate year after year. In fact, 11 Netflix original movies had won an Oscar at the start of last year, a number which has risen to 16 since. Awards aside, it's no doubt that Netflix released some incredible original films in 2022, including game-changing movies such as The Gray Man, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, Purple Hearts, Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical, and The Adam Project.
Throughout the coming year, we can expect much of the same. Netflix just dropped a list of all of the Netflix originals set to hit the platform in 2023, and it's packed full of must-see movies. Here's a breakdown of all 16 new films to be on the lookout for this year.
16 You People - January 27
You People is a comedy that has a star-studded cast with Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus among them. The film is directed by Kenya Barris and depicts a rideshare mix up which brings Ezra (Jonah Hill) and Amira (Lauren London) together. As they fall in love, the two must navigate clashing family dynamics and interfaith relationships in what is being called a "modern love story". The release date is set for January 27, 2023.
15 Your Place Or Mine - February 10
Your Place or Mine is a rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. The film showcases two best friends, Debbie and Peter, who are complete opposites. When they switch houses and lives for a week, though, they discover that they might not want what they thought they did. The official release date for the film is February 10, 2023.
14 Luther: The Fallen Sun - March 10
Starring Idris Elba, Luther: The Fallen Sun is a drama thriller film based on a continuation of the award-winning British television series of the same name. Elba plays detective John Luther, who is serving time in prison while a serial killer roams free on the streets of London. Luther decides to break free from prison in order to finish the job of catching the man committing the murders. The film will be released on Netflix on March 10, 2023.
13 Murder Mystery 2 - March 31
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston unite again to deliver Murder Mystery 2, a sequel to the 2019 action comedy. In the sequel, Nick and Audrey Spitz are now full-time detectives that find themselves caught in an all-too-personal case when their friend Maharaja is abducted at his own wedding. The movie premieres on the platform on March 31, 2023.
12 The Mother - May 12
The Mother is an action film starring Jennifer Lopez, whose character is an assassin on the run that is trying to protect the daughter that she gave up years before. The movie debuts on the streaming service on May 12, 2023.
11 Extraction 2 - June 16
Chris Hemsworth returns for Extraction 2, where his character Tyler Rake is again tasked with a deadly mission from the Australian black ops mercenary. The task at hand? Rake must rescue the family of a Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held. Hemsworth actually teased the movie sequel after Extraction's huge success in 2020. The anticipated second film is set to be released on June 16, 2023.
10 They Cloned Tyrone - July 21
They Cloned Tyrone is a mystery action thriller starring John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris, an unlikely trio that are brought together through a series of eerie events. This leads the group on a hunt to uncover what they deem to be a government conspiracy. The Netflix film will be released on the streaming platform on July 21, 2023.
9 Heart Of Stone - August 11
Heart of Stone is an action movie directed by Tom Harper. The film centers around Rachel Stone, played by Gal Gadot, who is an intelligence operative that is described as being "the only woman who stands between her powerful, global, peacekeeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset." The movie will be released on Netflix on August 11, 2023.
8 Lift - August 25
Lift is another action film, starring Kevin Hart. The movie follows an international heist crew as they are tasked with pulling off a heist on a plane that is mid-flight. Lift will debut on the streaming platform on August 25, 2023.
7 Damsel - October 13
Millie Bobby Brown stars in Damsel as the titular character who agrees to marry a prince, only to be thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon after learning that the royal family has chosen her as a sacrifice in reparation of an ancient debt. The action adventure film is set to be released on October 13, 2023.
6 Pain Hustlers - October 27
Pain Hustlers stars Chris Evans and Emily Blunt, who plays a blue-collar woman struggling to provide for her daughter. When Blunt's character takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical startup, she gets caught up in dangerous racketeering scheme. The drama will hit the platform on October 27, 2023.
5 The Killer - November 10
A dangerous assassin embarks on an international manhunt in the thriller film, The Killer. The movie, directed by David Fincher, is set to be released on November 10, 2023.
4 A Family Affair - November 17
This rom-com stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Joey King, and more. The movie centers around a young woman, her mother, and her movie-star boss as they explore love, sex, and identity. A Family Affair can be streamed starting on November 17, 2023.
3 Leo - November 22
Adam Sandler is one of the many actors that Netflix likes to use in their originals, and he returns to the platform again to be the lead voice actor for Leo. The film is an animated coming-of-age film about the last year of elementary school, as seen through the eyes of the titular class pet Leo, a 74-year-old lizard.
Upon learning that he only has one year left to live, Leo plans an escape so that he can experience life on the outside, which winds up leading him to "the strangest but most rewarding bucket list ever." Leo will premiere on Netflix on November 22, 2023.
2 Leave The World Behind - December 8
Leave the World Behind is a thriller starring Julia Roberts. The film follows a family vacation that is interrupted when two strangers arrive with news of a blackout. The mystery requires two families to learn how to survive among the crisis. The movie has an official release date of December 8, 2023.
1 Rebel Moon - December 22
Rebel Moon is an action film about a peaceful colony that finds itself threatened by armies sent by the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. In response, the colony sends Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past, to find help from warriors residing on neighboring planets. The movie is set to be released on December 22, 2023.
