Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of the most anticipated films in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the first movie from the studio to feature a predominantly Asian cast, and Simu Liu portrays Marvel's first-ever Asian superhero on the big-screen, the titular crime-fighter Shang-Chi.

Days ahead of schedule, the studio dropped a teaser trailer and a poster for the movie, marking Liu's birthday. It follows Shang-Chi as he battles his past and confronts the malicious Ten Rings organization that was referenced decades ago in an Iron Man movie.

Fans believed the trailer called for celebration, and thanked the studio for finally bringing representation to the Asian community. While some congratulated Liu on joining the MCU, others, Nicki Minaj fans in particular posed a bit of a problem, and they attacked the actor for a tweet he posted years ago.

Simu Liu Isn't A Nicki Minaj Fan...

The Kim's Convenience star shared a tweet back in 2012, expressing his opinion on Nicki Minaj's music. "I thought I was at a Nicki Minaj concert for 20 minutes before I realized I was just watching a homeless man yell at a pigeon..." he wrote in the tweet.

When Twitter users discovered the nearly decade-old tweet, some Nicki Minaj fans thought it was hilarious and in good taste...but then came the trolls.

There was a massive debate on the platform with Minaj's fans calling the actor names and sharing his tweets while naming them "anti-black" and "racist".

Marvel fans quickly came to the actor's support, sharing that "the way people dug up old tweets about simu liu the second the sang chi trailer dropped" was troubling to say the least.

"the nicki stans calling simu liu a nobody are a different kind of stupid like he's literally the lead in a marvel movie," wrote another fan.

The actor seemed to have gotten hold of the hate he was receiving on Twitter, and shared his old tweet, explaining "Well this was a highly dumb tweet. Looks like a dumb 23 year old trying to sound clever," and later added, "Deleting!" while taking it down.

Fans believe it is extremely unfortunate how trolls have accused Liu of racism.

The Canadian actor threw himself into intense training for the role of Shang-Chi. The super-hero's face isn't hidden by a mask, so Liu had to learn to do as many of his own stunts as possible.

Following Marvel's Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release on September 3, 2021!
