Despite her seemingly charmed life, Nicole Kidman has actually had a pretty dramatic relationship with members of her family. For one, her father died under highly mysterious circumstances. But the most famously troubled relationship in her life is the one with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise. And it's this failed relationship that is responsible for the nearly non-existent relationship between Nicole and her adopted kids, Isabella 'Bella' and Connor.

Nicole is blessed with four children. Two with Tom (Bella and Connor) and two with her current husband, country star Keith Urban (Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret). Of course, her relationship with Isabella 'Bella' Jane and Connor is nothing like that of most mothers and their kids. And it's absolutely nothing like the one between Nicole and her biological children with Keith. Here's the muddy and somewhat tragic truth about Nicole and her kids...

Nicole's Relationship With Bella And Connor

If you know anything about The Church of Scientology, you'd know that the organization isn't a fan of those who they deem 'Suppressive Persons'. Usually, these 'SP's are those who are not followers of the church and therefore could be someone who could help divert a church member's loyalty to the organization. As almost every other news outlet has said regarding this topic, this appears to be the reason why Nicole has such a strained relationship with Bella and Connor.

Both Bella and Connor have continued to be members of the church thanks to their father, Tom, who is one of the church's most ardent and famous supporters.

According to Hello!, Nicole has kept extremely quiet about her relationship with Bella and Connor for years. This is in the face of tons of outlets claiming that she has basically no relationship with the kids due to Tom and the Church of Scientology. Year after year, she was asked about them, and year after year she did everything she could to keep silent. "I have to protect all those relationships," Nicole once said in an interview. "I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."

Nicole has always done her best to be respectful of her children's choices and never speak about her obviously challenging relationship with Tom. However, in 2019, Nicole finally said something that gave fans a bit more context into the relationship with her Bella and Connor.

"Motherhood is about the journey," Nicole Kidman said to The Sun. "There are going to be incredible peaks and valleys, whether you are an adopting mother or a birth mother. What a child needs is love."

Nicole then made direct reference to the origination that many believe responsible for the strained relationship between her and her eldest kids. "They have made choices to be Scientologists. It’s our job as a parent to always offer unconditional love."

It seems as though Nicole is being extremely cautious and polite about her almost non-existing relationship with her adopted kids. In all likelihood, she probably never sees them and hasn't been spotted publicly with them since 2007. Nicole was also not invited to Connor's wedding in 2019 nor Bella's in 2015. It's doubtful that Nicole is the reason for their strained relationship given all the information there is out there about the church and Tom's rumored desires to keep her from them.

As for Bella and Connor's perspective on the matter, they rarely speak to the press, therefore it's almost impossible to know. However, Bella did like a few of her mother's Instagram posts. This is about the only public interaction they have had. This seems to be the opposite of their relationship with their father. Not only have Bella and Connor been spotted with Tom over the years, but Bella also waxed poetic about her father on Instagram.

On top of this, according to The Daily Mail and Leah Remini's book, Bella once called her mother a "f***ing SP", signaling that their devotion to Scientology is the reason why Nicole is not involved in their lives. The same goes for Tom Cruise's other ex-wife, Katie Holmes, and their biological daughter Suri. According to Little Things, Tom is estranged from his youngest daughter who is not involved with the church.

Nicole's Relationship With Sunday And Faith

The Big Little Lies star has a much more traditional relationship with the two girls she had with Keith Urban. While Nicole is notoriously private about her two young daughters, it's clear that she's exceptionally close with them. They all live in the same house. They vacation together, she speaks about them on talk shows, and Nicole even thanks them in her award acceptance speeches like every other celebrity.

In any case, Sunday and Faith are giving Nicole the type of mothering experience she probably always wanted and almost certainly deserves. Here's hoping that Connor and Bella can find their way back to her one day.
