Fans who found a new favorite actress in Octavia from 'The 100' may not have realized that the actress was actually arrested while the show was filming, or what, exactly, she was accused of.
Who Is Marie Avgeropoulos?
Though she arguably grew to even greater fame on 'The 100' as Octavia, Marie Avgeropoulos was already a somewhat seasoned actress by the time she appeared on the hit series. She was formerly a cast member on 'Supernatural,' albeit in a minor role, and she was killed off very quickly.
But that was all the way back in 2009, and in between her on-screen death in 'Supernatural' and her revival as Octavia in 2014, Avgeropoulos had plenty of other on-screen experience to speak of.
She appeared on a handful of other TV series for an episode or two, appeared in three films, debuted in some TV movies, and then settled into a long-term role on 'The 100.'
Legal Troubles Threatened Marie's 'The 100' Role
The character of Octavia on 'The 100' was somewhat unpredictable, and her character development ran the gamut. Octavia was, at first, meek and mild, hiding from the authorities in her outer space home. Later, of course, she stands up against abuses of power and ultimately became a strong leader.
So when fans heard that Marie Avgeropoulos had been arrested, some might have wondered whether she was embodying her character a bit too much. Maybe she toed the line and got in trouble? But it turns out it was something else entirely.
Avgeropoulos was arrested in 2018 after an apparent altercation with her boyfriend. E! Online reported that Marie was charged with injuring a spouse or cohabitant, after an argument on August 5th, 2018. The charge was for felony domestic violence, and the news source reported that Marie appeared to be crying in the resulting mug shot.
But what happened, and how did the promising actress wind up behind bars?
What Was Octavia From 'The 100' Arrested For?
The official report states that Marie Avgeropoulos and her boyfriend, an unnamed 41-year-old, were driving on the freeway when Marie began to strike him, "resulting in minor injuries." The boyfriend called 911, police arrived, and because there were visible injuries to the boyfriend, Avgeropoulos was arrested.
But as fans already know, Marie didn't wind up with a 364-day jail sentence, as was possible with such a charge, and she also didn't lose her role on 'The 100.' In fact, very little fuss was made over the entire issue, which had folks wondering why. After all, domestic violence is a serious charge.
How Did Marie Avgeropoulos Avoid Charges?
Ultimately, Avgeropoulos' boyfriend bailed her out, dropped the charges, and things went back to normal, apparently. It's an anticlimactic finale to a very dramatic story, but there's an explanation that most people seemed eager to accept.
It was reported that Marie Avgeropoulos had recently started a new medication, and on the night in question, she had also consumed wine. The combination of whatever medication she was using and the wine "resulted in a bad reaction," sources state.
It sounds as if Avgeropoulos wasn't in control of her own actions, and it also seems that most people readily accepted the explanation, especially as her boyfriend didn't pursue charges and claimed that he had only called 911 to try and get help for his girlfriend, not have her arrested.
It does sound a little bit like that time Bella Hadid blamed her Lyme disease for a DUI, to consider another perspective. But as it seems no one was grossly injured, maybe Marie and her anonymous boyfriend worked things out among themselves?
Where Is Marie Avgeropoulos Now?
It seems that all was forgiven after the charges against Marie were dropped, and she of course went back to work on 'The 100' in the following months and years. But the show has since wrapped, leaving fans to wonder what happened to Octavia after she rode off into the sunset.
Marie had one film come out in 2020, with another project reportedly in the works at the moment, but she hasn't dived right into other projects post-'The 100.'
Who Is Octavia From 'The 100' Dating Now?
According to various news sources, and Marie's own Instagram, she's been dating Alain Moussi, a Canadian actor and stuntman, for a while now. And although it's unclear who Avgeroupolos was dating prior, it's clear that Moussi was not the boyfriend involved in the aforementioned altercation; Alain is currently 40, while Marie's then-boyfriend was 41 (in 2018).
The two seem quite happy together, and Marie Avgeroupolos has had no further run-ins with the law in the years since the wine plus meds mishap. Here's hoping she's got her medications worked out, and that she and her boyfriend continue to be as happy as they appear in her Instagram posts.
