Not everyone likes their coworkers. They’re not our friends (at least not at first) and they’re not our family. If we don’t get along with a coworker, we can brush it off because, well, once we clock out and go home, we don’t have to deal with them, right?
The same cannot be said for the set of a movie or TV show. Rather than working a 9-to-5, actors can be on set for 14 hours a day, shooting and reshooting the same scenes over and over. That can fray even the steeliest of nerves, and, if someone is working with a person they can’t stand, can sow the seeds of a feud.
Personality clashes and different values are usually at the core of these feuds and, while some stars are able to leave the drama on the set, others are still sore about them years – or even decades! – later.
20 Lea Michele Vs. Naya Rivera
What do you get when you combine two strong women, one musical TV show, and a whole lot of competition? A feud of Glee-sized proportions! According to Rivera’s 2016 memoir, by season 6, she and Michele weren’t even speaking to each other and she doubts that they’ll ever even sit on the same couch together ever again!
19 Will Smith Vs. Janet Hubert
While The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air hasn’t aired a new episode since 1996, the feud between costars Smith and Hubert is still going strong! Hubert was fired from the show in 1993, with “creative differences” as the excuse, but by 2011, Hubert was still calling Smith an “egomaniac” and in 2013 she said he did some “heinous, horrible things to [her]”. Some wounds never heal.
18 Shia Labeouf Vs. Tom Hardy
Shia Labeouf has a reputation for being difficult to work with, and it earned him an enemy in Tom Hardy when the two filmed Lawless. During a scene, Labeouf knocked out Hardy, but later claimed he just got too into the moment. Considering Labeouf’s spotty behavioural track record, we doubt we’ll ever see them share screen time again.
17 James Franco Vs. Tyrese Gibson
Going a little too Method on the 2006 set of Annapolis, Franco found himself actually trading blows with costar Gibson. Speaking to Elle, Gibson said, “The dude was full-on hitting me. I was always like, ‘James, lighten up, man. We’re just practicing.’ He never lightened up.” Franco, for his part, takes blame but doesn’t recall the incident as described.
16 Jamie Foxx Vs. LL Cool J
Some times, actors just get carried away in fight scenes and, while on the set of Any Given Sunday, rapper LL Cool J and Jamie Foxx ended up fighting for real, to the point that the police were actually called! The beef was immortalized in an LL Cool J track that calls Foxx names and says he’s not as funny as Chris Rock, which, burn?
15 George Takei Vs. William Shatner
Thanks to a growing ego, Shatner and Takei weren’t exactly BFFs during the filming of Star Trek, according to Takei’s 1994 autobiography. Shatner shares his costar’s disdain, describing in an interview that, “there must be something else inside George that is festering, and it makes him so unhappy that he takes it out on me, I effect a total stranger.”
14 Charlie Sheen Vs. Selma Blair
Sheen was off the rails for a while when Blair was cast on his show Anger Management, but once Blair declared her concerns regarding Sheen’s work ethic, all hell broke loose. He fired her via text, calling her names and later, on Watch What Happens Live!, said that he would kick Blair and former costar Jenny McCarthy to the curb.
13 Channing Tatum Vs. Alex Pettyfer
Pettyfer was an up-and-comer when he was cast in Magic Mike, but he bit the hand that fed him by being a diva on set and refusing to pay rent to a friend of Tatum’s who was giving him a place to stay during the shoot. Along with his disdain for Hollywood, Pettyfer was ousted from the sequel and effectively blackballed by Hollywood.
12 Debra Winger Vs. Shirley MacLaine
For playing a devoted mother-daughter duo, Winger and MacLaine sure had us fooled because these two hated each other! The actresses regularly got into physical altercations and, when the Oscars rolled around and MacLaine won for her role (both had been nominated in the same category), she shouted, “I deserve this!” over the announcement of Winger’s name.
11 Freddie Prinze Jr. Vs. Kiefer Sutherland
Some feuds are enough to make you rethink your career, which is what happened to Prinze Jr. after he shared the screen with Sutherland on the set of 24. Speaking of the experience in a later interview, Prinze Jr. said, “Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world…I think everyone that’s worked with him has said that. I just wanted to quit the business after that.”
10 Dwayne Johnson Vs. Vin Diesel
Johnson took to social media to air his grievances about his Furious costar Diesel, calling him all sorts of names and expletives without addressing Diesel directly. The feud got so bad that the pair had to film their scenes separately! While Diesel tried to mend fences, it doesn’t appear as if Johnson will be accepting any olive branches any time soon.
9 Kendra Wilkinson Vs. Holly Madison
Being on a reality show has its own set of dramas, but it wasn’t until after filming finished that Wikinson and Madison really got into it. Madison released her memoir in 2015 detailing her time with The Girls Next Door and the Playboy Mansion, much to the chagrin of Wilkinson. Wilkinson took to Twitter to call out her former costar in a series of graphic claims about her ex-BFF’s intimate life.
8 Stacy London Vs. Clinton Kelly
Hosts of What Not To Wear came to blows after Kelly released his 2017 and hinted that there were tensions between the two. London responded by blocking him on all social media. (To be fair, Kelly did write in his book, “There’s a part of me that will love Stacy London forever, and a part of me that would be just fine if I never saw her again.”)
7 Paris Hilton Vs. Nicole Richie
A toxic friendship that was sustained by partying and a reality show, it was jealousy that drove these two apart in 2005. Richie threw a party for Hilton and aired her personal tape while Hilton was hosting Saturday Night Live. In response, Hilton told tabloids that Richie and she were no longer friends. They’ve since put the past behind them, but still rarely speak.
6 Lauren Conrad Vs. Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt
More drama over a tape that (in this case) likely never existed, Conrad and Montag were the hotties of The Hills before Pratt came into the picture. Conrad cut ties with Montag over the rumors and has kept her distance ever since. Pratt and Montag, on the other hand, have regularly shored up the drama for TV ratings (and a Hills reboot!).
5 Bette Davis Vs. Joan Crawford
A feud so iconic it actually inspired a TV miniseries, Davis and Crawford detested each other for decades. While filming Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, the two continually sniped at each other: Davis kicked Crawford in the head and Crawford snuck weights in her pockets when Davis had to drag her body. Finally, the two campaigned against one another at the Oscars (Crawford accepted the award for another actress).
4 Bill Murray Vs. Lucy Liu
While filming 2000’s Charlie’s Angels, the feud between Murray and Liu came to such a head that the pair actually had to be separated as they came to physical blows! Murray had insulted Liu’s acting prowess, telling her bluntly, “You can’t act!” Liu responded by attempting to punch Murray, which led to a separation (and a recasting of Bosley for the sequel).
3 Julia Roberts Vs. Nick Nolte
Playing at lovers when you hate one another requires talent, and there was a lot of hatred between Roberts and Nolte on the set of I Love Trouble. Roberts hated Nolte’s machismo and insulted him, while Nolte did everything to agitate her. Despite being released in 1994, in 2003 Roberts still called her costar a “disgusting human being”. The pair worked more with stand-ins than with each other!
2 Sarah Jessica Parker Vs. Kim Cattrall
This feud came to a head when plans for a third SATC movie were scrapped in 2017. Parker laid the blame on Cattrall, who said she never agreed to the film in the first place. Finally, after the untimely death of Cattrall’s brother, Parker offered her condolences, only to be rebuffed by her costar who wrote, “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time.”
1 Mariah Carey Vs. Nicki Minaj
In 2016, Carey called her time with Minaj on American Idol “the most abusive experience,” and there were so many reports of in-fighting on set that production had to be stopped multiple times to calm both divas down. The two constantly sniped at each other an in interviews, and Carey later described working with Minaj as “working in hell with Satan.”
