One-hit wonders are infectious and catchy, and yet, with all of their popularity, it's ironic that many people don't know the meanings behind the lyrics, or at least the true meanings.

Everyone is guilty of jamming to a song without knowing what they're saying. When a song has a catchy beat, sometimes that's all it needs to soar high on the charts. Language isn't a barrier nor the song's relatability. If the song sounds sonically pleasing, that's often enough for most people.

Some song meanings many of us weren't aware of as children, or we may not have taken the time to look up another language to discover the true meaning behind the songs that we sang so fervently. Below is a list of ten one-hit wonders and the meanings behind them.

10 Los del Río - "Macarena [Bayside Boys Mix]"

In 2002, VH1 ranked this as the #1 one-hit wonder of all time for good reason. This one-hit-wonder started an ultimate dance craze in the 90s, and until this day, people of all generations do this dance. Many people assumed that "Macarena" was merely the name of the dance. However, according to the Huffington Post, "Macarena" is the name of the woman. This woman cheats on her boyfriend while he is in the army. This information may be news to you if you aren't fluent in Spanish or a 90s music enthusiast.

9 Baha Men - "Who Let The Dogs Out"

If you are a 90s kid, it was pretty hard to escape this track. You may be shocked to know that this song has a feminist theme, according to Anslem Douglas, the original singer of the song entitled Dogie which came out in 1998. The Baha Men covered this popular jam in 2000, and Douglas states on his website that this is a man-bashing song that calls out men cat-calling and name-calling women by referring to men as "dogs."

8 A-ha - "Take On Me"

It's not that this song has an obscure hidden message, but it makes our list because most people tune this jam out after the high-pitched chorus hits their eardrums.  Long story short, this song is about unrequited love. A man has a romantic interest in a woman, and she won't "take him on." Interestingly enough, vocalist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy came up with this idea about his real-life love interest, which he eventually married in 1991. Happy endings do exist! Norwegian group A-Ha had many hits in their home country, technically not being one-hit wonders, but "Take On Me" is the only song to hit the US charts, and what a big hit it was.

7 Eiffel 65 - "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"

The lyrics do not say, "If I were green, I would die." as so many fans of the song believed. The lyrics that many people think they hear are, in fact, random ad-libs. The "lyrics" that people believe they hear mean nothing. However, this was intentional. The ad-libs were supposed to be catchy enough and ambiguous enough that all age groups could sing them.

Furthermore, being blue doesn't have a specific meaning technically. In an interview produced by Vice, which covered how the song became so big, the lyricists knew that people would develop a personalized interpretation of what "I'm blue" means. They knew that the idea of being blue is synonymous with sadness, the sky, and so many things. People could "look through [their lens] and filter their world through a color." explains Jeffrey Jey. None of the writers confirm that this 1998 Europop hit is explicitly about depression.

6 Desiigner - "Panda"

With a first listen, many people couldn't make out more than the words "panda" and "I got broads in Atlanta" without looking up the lyrics,  So what is a "panda"? We can all assume that Desiigner was not talking about a cute bearlike mammal. He spoke of a unique BMW model X6 car with black and white detailing that resembles a Panda. On May 7th, 2016, this song shot to #1 on the charts.

5 Iron Butterfly - "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"

This song came out in 1968!!! If you're not familiar with this song, and you're a Nas fan, then you should know that he brilliantly samples this song on Hip Hop Is Dead. So what in the world does "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida" mean??? It means that you should never record a record while under the influence. The lyrics were supposed to say "in the garden of Eden, baby," depicting a love song from Adam to Eve. However, organist-vocalist Doug Ingle had a lot of Red Mountain wine that night, causing him to slur his words.

4 Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks"

The meanings behind these lyrics are quite dark. This song sounds bouncy and feel-good, so you would assume that the lyrics have a positive message, but no, listen closer. The lyrics are as follows: "All the other kids with the pumped-up kicks, better run, better run, outrun my gun." If you guessed that the lyrics are about a school shooting, you are correct. This controversial song about a homicidal teenager hit #3 on the Billboard charts.

3 Psy - "Gagnam Style"

Like Macarena, this is another song where it's plausible that people don't know the meaning behind the song due to a language barrier. Besides the words "Heeeey sexy ladies", the entire song is in Korean. This seemingly happy-go-lucky song has a deep meaning as well. In short, "Gangnam Style" has subtle messages about wealth, class, and value in South Korean society. In summation, being materialistic and trying to appear to be a rich hotshot is not all that it's cracked up to be. There is so much meaning behind this cultural dance phenomenon.

LA-based hip-hop group The Finatticz dropped this track in 2012, with it becoming a minor hit locally. Thanks to Vine, this song shot up the charts in 2013. It went to #35 on the Hot Billboard 100 and #10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. People love a song that they can dance to, and unlike "da ba de," "thun thun" means something, something that may shock you. It's a term for MDMA, a.k.a. Molly.

1 Lil Nas X - "Old Town Road"

This song was inescapable in 2019.  Is the "Old Town Road" an actual place? No. It's a metaphor for Lil Nas X's path to success and his limitless opportunities. The "horse" that he's referring to merely means that all he needs is his talent to make it in hip-hop while other people need "Porsches," gimmicks, or a complicated way to make it to where they want to go in life. " Also, technically, the Panini rapper is not a one-hit-wonder because four of his songs charted on Billboard, but this song is worth talking about and the most-known song of the singer.
