Could people soon be able to speak to dolphins? Scientists have discovered a new way of leering the animal’s language that makes the answer to that question yes.
Who hasn’t dreamed of being able to understand the unique language of a dolphin? These animals are not only one of the cutest animals alive, but the way they speak to each other has always been a mystery to people. For years, scientists have been trying to decode their special language, with little to no luck. However, with computers and modern technology, scientists are closer than ever to cracking the language.
Dolphins use clicks to speak. Marine biologists have been trying to decode these clicks to understand their language better and now there is a breakthrough. A new computer program helped identify some of the clicks, which may not sound like a lot but it is a huge step in the right direction.
According to Azula, a website that focuses on ocean life; scientists recently fed 52 different dolphin clicks into a computer program. The program used an advanced algorithm to listen to the different speeds and pitches of each click. It was able to distinguish seven major separate ones, so cool. These clicks were identified to be from different dolphins around the Louisiana and Pacific Ocean areas.
This new computer program is not only beneficial for understanding a dolphin’s language but also allows scientists to study the animal’s ability to respond to environmental hazards. The more knowledge scientists have on how dolphins respond to climate change, pollution, dangerous weather, and oil spills, the more they will be able to protect them in the future.
It is pretty crazy that a computer is helping decode how dolphins speak to each other. Humans don’t have the capability of distinguishing between the different clicks a dolphin uses but computers can. This new information does not mean that humans and dolphins will be having a conversation tomorrow but it could very well happen soon. Seriously who wouldn’t want to have chat with a dolphin? They are one of the most intriguing animals on the planet. Plus they are so cute!
