Canadian rapper Drake is arguably one of the most enthusiastic celebrity sports fans in North America right now. Drake has become a fixture at Toronto Raptors basketball games in recent years. He even never missed a Raptors playoff game during the Raptors' 2019 playoff run. His unwavering support and loyalty to the team has made him almost seem as if he is part of the team.
Unlike other celebrity sports fans, such as Spike Lee, Drake has become more of a spectacle and divisive figure because of the way he handles himself at various sporting events. For example, Drake recently generated headlines and controversy when he massaged Raptors' coach Nick Nurse during a playoff game.
While Drake is synonymous with attending Raptors games, he rarely misses NBA All-Star games and has also been known to attend games for other sports. Regardless of the team, Drake has a tendency to annoy some viewers. Let's take a look at some of Drake's most annoying behaviors at sporting events.
20 The 2014 Slam Dunk Contest
At the 2014 Slam Dunk contest, Drake assisted Terrence Ross (then with the Toronto Raptors) during one of his dunks. This assist came during the battle round, in which Ross’ Drake-assisted dunk helped him defeat his opponent, Damian Lillard. In addition to Drake having to get involved in the Slam Dunk festivities, one of the main reasons this is annoying is because Drake felt the need to remain right by the basket on the court to get a front-row seat to the action.
19 Drake And The Sedin Twins
In this photo, Drake got to hang out with Henrik and Daniel Sedin while they were both playing for the Vancouver Canucks. Drake seemingly had the brilliant idea of posing for a photo with the Sedin twins in his customized NHL jersey before that night’s game. Based on the looks on their faces, neither Sedin twin seemed overly impressed here.
18 Drake Massaging Johnny Manziel
Apparently Drake is close friends with Johnny Manziel – or, at least we hope they are based on this photo of Drake giving Manziel a shoulder massage. This photo was taken at an NCAA basketball game between Kentucky and Wisconsin back in 2014 just prior to the NFL draft where he was taken 22nd overall by the Cleveland Browns.
17 With The Raptors' Commentary Team
Normally, Drake is sitting at Raptors games in his courtside seats right next to the Raptors bench. However, as this photo suggests, Drake instead chose to spend part of the game with Leo Rautins and Matt Devlin – the Raptors play-by-play commentary team.
16 Supporting Serena Williams
Drake can also be spotted at various tennis events. At the 2011 Rogers Cup, Drake was there supporting Serena Williams during her second-round contest against Julia Gorges. This is a surprisingly animated reaction from Drake, who does not seem to acknowledge the unwritten rule of politeness and not cheering during a tennis match.
15 Trolling Joel Embiid
During Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals, Joel Embiid infamously trolled the Raptors when he helped lead the Sixers to a 2-1 series lead. Karma came back around during Game 5 of that series as Drake returned the effort by mimicking Embiid’s airplane gesture. Sure, Embiid might have started it but this still doesn’t make Drake look any less annoying.
14 Drake's Dell Curry Jersey
During Game 1 of the 2019 NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors, Drake wore a throwback Dell Curry Raptors’ jersey. Dell, who is the father of Warriors’ star Steph Curry, had played three seasons in Toronto from 1999 – 2002. That is admittedly some subtle trolling of Steph, but it still would have been cool to see Steph wear his father’s old Raptors jersey had Drake not beaten him to it.
13 His Heated Exchange With Draymond Green
Yet again during the 2019 NBA Finals, Drake managed to find a way to get under the skin of another Warriors star. This time around, Drake had drawn the ire of Draymond Green. As you can see from this photo of their heated exchange, Green had had enough of his trolling. If it weren’t for Curry and Jordan Bell, Green and Drake might have gotten into a scuffle. Sometimes Drake forgets he is really just a glorified fan.
12 Drake And Kendrick Perkins
Although he is not shown in this photograph, Drake had gotten into a war of words with veteran center Kendrick Perkins during a 2018 game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors. According to the National Post, there was a halftime conversation where Perkins was telling Raptors' center Serge Ibaka that Cleveland was going to win the game. Drake had decided to butt in and get into a war of words with Perkins.
11 Drake Curses The Toronto Maple Leafs
This one has got to be both annoying and frustrating for fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the Maple Leafs’ first-round playoff game against the Boston Bruins, Drake showed up at the game in a Leafs jersey. Unfortunately, the Leafs went on to lose that game and the series – adding further fuel to the fire that the Drake curse does exist.
10 Antics At The 2013 Slam Dunk Contest
For those who weren’t aware, Drake made quite a spectacle of himself during NBA’s 2013 Slam Dunk contest. This photo provides just a glimpse of what went on at courtside, but this is actually one of the times where Drake was relatively calm. This was rather annoying since the dunk contest is supposed to be about talented athletes on the court, not the famous courtside fans.
9 Drake And Chris Bosh
Truthfully, we aren’t exactly sure of the context behind this photo that was captured during the Miami Heat’s 2013 playoff series against the Chicago Bulls. In this photo, we see Drake looking absolutely giddy and starstruck to have seen Chris Bosh up close. Bosh departed the Raptors before Drake’s appearance at their games became a regular occurrence.
8 Drake And Kevin Durant
This photo of Drake hanging out with Kevin Durant was taken during the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. Drake was just starting to become famous and was at the start of his rapping career at the time of this picture, yet he was still able to snag an opportunity to hang out with some of the game’s greatest players in 2013.
7 Trolling Giannis Antetokounmpo
During the 2019 Milwaukee Bucks – Toronto Raptors Eastern Conference finals, Giannis Antetokounmpo was yet another victim of Drake’s frequent trolling. Whenever Giannis was sent to the free-throw line and missed a shot, Drake either laughed hysterically or doing these mock teardrop gestures, as seen in this photo.
6 Drake's Obsession With Doris Burke
Drake has very publicly made it known that he has a huge crush on ESPN analyst Doris Burke, such as wearing a sweater with her face on it. He has frequently flirted with her on Twitter, such as inviting her over for dinner as long as she comes alone. This open flirtation and wearing her face on his sweater on national TV is really quite weird and annoying.
5 Calming Down Mike Budenholzer
It’s safe to say that Milwaukee Bucks’ coach is no fan of Drake’s antics, which he got to see up close during the 2019 playoffs. However, that did not stop Drake from intervening and trying to help calm down Mike Budenholzer from going after one of the referees.
4 Antics During Raptors' Game 7 Loss
During the 2014 NBA playoffs, the Raptors were eliminated in seven games against the Brooklyn Nets. It was yet another first-round exit for the Raptors, and the players were most likely frustrated with their lack of playoff success. Of course, Drake made sure to excessively praise and support the players by cheering them on in the final minutes by practically walking onto the court – as seen in this photo.
3 DeMarcus Cousins' Interview Ft. Drake
I assure you this is not photoshopped. In 20101, DeMarcus Cousins was the star forward for Kentucky’s NCAA basketball team. Drake had managed to become close friends with him before he made it to the NBA. In fact, they became such close friends that Drake was wrapped under Cousins’ arm during his post-game interview.
2 Attending A Seattle Seahawks Practice
Drake has never seemed like a huge football guy, although he jumped on the bandwagon and became a fan of the Seattle Seahawks. He became such a fan that he decided to visit a Seattle Seahawks practice – which is usually closed to the public – prior to the Seahawks game that night.
1 Massaging Nick Nurse
During Game 3 of the 2019 Eastern Conference Finals, Drake massaged the shoulders of Raptors’ coach Nick Nurse towards the of the game when it looked like the Raptors were about to pull off a victory against the Milwaukee Bucks. This prompted a lot of controversy as well as a warning from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver telling Drake to respect boundaries.
