Pink is one of music's biggest stars, and it's no surprise given her incredible talent. She, like Fergie, Lil Nas X, and Bruno Mars, is known by a stage name rather than her own name. She may have a rotating array of rainbow hair colors, but she has always been Pink to her fans. And because of her love for her hairdo, it’s long been assumed that her stage name was derived from “pink” hair.

In fact, the story behind her moniker has been quite the discussion throughout the years. The singer once admitted she even preferred her loved ones to call her Pink because hearing her true name makes her uncomfortable. When asked about the roots of her stage name, she said there were “lots and lots of reasons.” Let’s dive in to know the real reasons why!

Pink Doesn’t Like To Be Called By Her Birth Name

With Pink being one of the most famous singers in the world, many may wonder what her real name was and why she preferred to use her stage name instead. Born on September 8, 1979, her mother Judy Moore and father Jim Moore named her Alecia Beth Moore. Since rising to fame, though, she was known by her moniker, something she seems to prefer.

The singer previously expressed that being called her birth name makes her feel ‘uncomfortable’ and she doesn’t seem to be a fan of it. She explained, “All my friends have pretty much reverted back to Alecia because the world has claimed Pink. It was my nickname but now it’s not ours anymore, it’s just how everyone knows me. Now Alecia is more like my nickname, my pet name.”

Pink went on to reveal the reason why he hates hearing her true name, saying, “I’m still getting used to it. It’s very strange. Carey uses Alecia when he’s mad at me. When anybody is mad at me they call me Alecia. That’s why it makes me uncomfortable.”

Pink Got Her Stage Name From Childhood Bullying

Before Pink became well-known singer all over the world, she actually got her nickname when she was bullied as a child. The alias was inspired by an embarrassing incident she experienced back then. “It’s just a nickname that’s been following me my whole life. It was a mean thing at first,” she shared.

The artist also revealed the awkward story behind the name Pink. She added, “Some kids at camp pulled my pants down and I blushed so much, and they were like, ‘Ha ha! Look at her! She’s pink!’ And then the movie Reservoir Dogs came out – and Mr. Pink was the one with the smart mouth, so it just happened all over again.”

She also addressed the backstory of her moniker during an interview with Good Morning America, while promoting her song, Just Like Fire. Aside from childhood bullying, she revealed that one of the main sources of inspirations for her famous Pink name was the film Reservoir Dogs.

In the film, Steve Buscemi plays the main character who is given the alias “Mr. Pink” during a bank heist. Steve’s character is unhappy with his name, immediately questioning the ring leader why he was given such particular color – to which the leader responds: “Mr. Pink, be grateful that you’re not Mr. Yellow.”

Pink Gave An Inspirational Speech On Facing Bullying

Pink, who almost got into a fistfight with major pop star Christina Aguilera, eventually grew from a nickname to a household name. She became a successful singer in her own right, selling millions of albums worldwide and earning accolades. She has proven to be an incredibly talented performer.

Meanwhile, the pop star once gave a speech during the MTV Video Music Awards about bullying. As she had been bullied as a child, she stood on stage to address the issue of bullying and relay a heartfelt story about her daughter. She shared that she was driving her child to school when out of the blue her little one said something that shocked her.

“’I’m the ugliest girl I know,” and I said, ‘huh?’. And she said, ‘yeah, I look like a boy with long hair,’” Pink shared. The pop star said she told her daughter that people criticize her for having short hair and a muscular body but she won’t change the way she presents herself to the world and her child shouldn’t either.

She recalled what she advised her youngster, “Babygirl we don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty.” Pink has really proven that true beauty does not mean only physical appearance; it is also the beauty that lies inside a human being. For Pink, going ‘under the knife’ to look prettier is not an option.
