A pit bull is being hailed as a hero after guiding a missing 2-year-old home.

Most stories involving babies and pit bulls usually have headlines about how the pit bull did something terrible. It’s nice to have a pit bull story that actually shows the lovable side of these beautiful dogs.

Penny is a slightly overweight pit bull owned by Beth Campbell. We’re not fat-shaming Penny! We’re just saying she’s a big dog. She’s also a hero since she saved Beth’s granddaughter, Charlee, from being harmed while lost in the woods.

Charlee and Penny went missing last Thursday evening from Beth’s home about 30 miles outside of Louisville, Kentucky. As soon as Beth noticed she contacted police and a search party was sent out full of volunteers. The wooded area around Beth’s home is well known to have dangerous wildlife like rattlesnakes and coyotes, so it was definitely important to find the missing toddler as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, after multiple searches by investigators and volunteers, Charlee couldn’t be found. After 36 hours, hope seemed all but lost. But then Beth saw Penny running back home and she knew that Charlee wouldn’t be too far behind.

She was right. Charlee was spotted on the front porch of Wayne Brown’s home, a local resident and one of the volunteers who had spent hours searching for Charlee on Thursday. She was dehydrated and covered in ticks, but otherwise, she was none the worse for wear.

Charlee was taken to the hospital where she stayed overnight for observation and was treated for dehydration.

Penny, on the other paw, was treated to a hero’s welcome. Beth told WISTV that she’s convinced it was Penny who kept Charlee safe in the woods and also guided the little girl back home.

"This is our hero right here," she said. "When my dog didn't come home, and my baby wasn't home, she was not going to leave that baby until she got here.”

In recognition of a job well done, Penny has been getting lots of extra treats and even a hamburger or two. Which will do nothing for her waistline, but you can’t deny a heroic dog her hamburger.
