A poacher has been ordered to watch the Disney animated classic Bambi over the course of his yearlong prison sentence.
We’re not quite sure if this is genius correctional work or cruel and unusual punishment. A Judge in Missouri has ordered a poacher who illegally killed hundreds of deer to watch Bambi at least once a month over the course of his 1-year prison sentence.
According to the Springfield News-Leader, David Berry Jr. killed hundreds of deer as part of a much larger poaching ring that extended as far as Nebraska and even Canada. The case is considered the largest poaching investigation in Missouri’s history.
The deer killed were mostly trophy bucks taken in the middle of the night for their heads, with the bodies left to rot in the forest.
At Berry’s sentencing, Lawrence County Judge Robert George found his behavior to be so repugnant that he wrote in a special measure in Berry’s sentence. He must “view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter,” according to court documents.
Of course, Berry didn’t act alone. His father, two brothers, and a friend were also arrested and fined a combined $51,000. They also had their hunting licenses temporarily or permanently revoked.
Berry was also sentenced for an additional 120 days due to a firearms probation violation in another county.
The illegal poaching ring spanned multiple states and even countries, with Nebraska, Kansas, and Canada all involved in the 9-month long investigation. So far, 14 other arrests have been made with 230 additional charges laid against members of the poaching ring, which got started sometime in 2015.
As for whether or not the judge’s Bambi-therapy will work, that’s hard to say. If Hollywood is a credible source (and it never is) then strapping someone down and forcing them to watch a movie is either a great way to brainwash someone or turn them into a serial killer. We’ll have to wait for the yearlong prison sentence to find out which way Berry will go.
