Chicken Run creators Aardman Studios have officially revealed that production has begun on a sequel to the iconic claymation movie.
Sequels and remakes appear to be the order of the day in many forms of entertainment right now. This year we were treated to a fourth Toy Story, a live-action remake of The Lion King, and later this month the Sega Genesis classic Aladdin will be re-released on present-day consoles. Disney isn't the only studio cashing in on the nostalgia hype, though.
Aardman Studios is also stepping up. If that name doesn't sound familiar, perhaps the names Wallace & Gromit will ring a bell. The dedicated employees of Aardman are the masterminds behind the world-famous man and dog duo. They are also the creators of Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon which is in theaters right now. Shaun started life as a character in an early Wallace & Gromit short.
Aardman also gave us Chicken Run all the way back in 2000. An unsuspecting hit that featured unlikely feathered friends Rocky and Ginger as they tried to break themselves and a whole cast of fowl out of a chicken farm. Aardman previously hinted that the turn of the century movie would be getting a sequel and confirmed this week that production has begun on Chicken Run 2, reports Metro.
Rocky & Ginger are coming home to roost! We’re delighted to announce we're working with @StudiocanalUK & @PatheUK on early development of a Chicken Run sequel! #ChickenRun2 will be our next movie release following Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon in Autumn 2019 with STUDIOCANAL pic.twitter.com/Cdof0e7qbl— Aardman Animations (@aardman) April 26, 2018
Aardman initially revealed that production would begin following the conclusion of Farmageddon, and it has remained true to that promise. "We have a model-making team and, at one point, it was just full of sheep, but slowly over the course of the following weeks it became overrun with chickens," revealed the movie's co-director. For employees who worked on the original Chicken Run almost two decades ago, it must have been pretty exciting to see the likes of Rocky and Ginger come back to life.
As for the actors who will be returning for the sequel, that information remains under wraps. Mel Gibson voiced Rocky in the original, so it'll be interesting to see if the big-time Hollywood star returns for the follow-up or if Chicken Run 2 will be a Rocky-less affair. What we do know is that Chicken Run 2 will have the same writers as the original, so two people who know its story better than anyone.
