Since she released her first album in 2005, it has felt like we've been on a journey with Rihanna. She was, after all, just 17 back then. Now she's recently turned 30 and yep, it feels like time has flew by when we realize we've been listening to and loving this R&B singer for well over a decade. But what she's done in those 10 years would make anyone who's done the same in their entire lifetime exhilarated.

Music, fashion, movies—Rihanna's done it all. But if there's anything we adore about Rihanna, it's the way she retains her authenticity. This Bad Gal is who she is and it's the reason why people love her. From her family roots to setting the record straight about Drake to her million dollar legs, here, 15 truths about the star that people probably don't know.

15 Robyn is her real name

Of course she isn't the first to do it. Many stars before her don't go by their given name. Some celebrities go by their middle name, some celebrities go by a family member's name and some celebrities go by an entirely different name altogether. Rihanna's real name is actually Robyn. Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988 in Barbados, the singer decided to go by her middle name on stage. Rihanna is an Arabic name, which means ''sweet basil'' by the way.

You may think she'd want to be called Rihanna in her home life, seeing as it is her ''star'' name, but she prefers to go by Robyn with her family and close friends. ''I get kind of numb to hearing Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna,” she told Rolling Stone. “When I hear Robyn, I pay attention.'' We guess when you're hearing Rihanna all the time both by people you know and people you don't know, it would be nice to hear something different from the people closest to you.

''Rihanna'' is a global superstar with hit records all over the Billboard charts. ''Robyn'' on the other hand, is the name her family and close friends call her. So, if you don't know her well, it's probably best not to come up to the singer and call her Robyn.

14 But you can also call her Miss. Combermere

When Rihanna was 15, she won a beauty pageant at her high school. She was named Miss. Combermere after dazzling the crowd with her performance of Mariah Carey's ''Hero.'' Now that is something we'd love to have seen. ''I kind of laughed at these stupid pageants,” Rihanna told the Daily Mail. “But my friends at school dared me to do it." As it turns out, Rihanna isn't bad on the catwalk, learning to hold her head up high by balancing books atop it.

We're not really surprised that Rihanna won a beauty pageant.

This is Rihanna we're talking about and we can't imagine there being a time when she wasn't anything less than an icon. But before we move forward onto the next fact about Rihanna, we just want to clear up a few things about her name. In addition to Robyn and Miss Combermere, Rihanna has a few nicknames: RiRi, The Barbados Babe, The Princess of Pop, The Caribbean Queen, The Bajan Beauty, Badgalriri and The Princess of R&B. Just in case you want some variation. We don't think we've ever heard of anyone with so many names as Rihanna. She's got at least 10 of them and she's Rihanna. She can have any name she likes.

13 She had a tough beginning

Despite what you may think, Rihanna wasn't born with a golden spoon in her mouth. She had to work hard to get to where she is today and that includes moving past a turbulent childhood. In fact, Rihanna's beginning was anything but idyllic. The eldest of three children, born to Ronald Fenty and Monica Fenty, Rihanna's childhood was tarnished by her father's struggle with substances. In addition to that, she also had to deal with her parents' turbulent marriage and they ended up divorcing when she was 14.

For a child, that's a lot to deal with. No kid should have to deal with those kind of struggles, turning your home from a safe place into somewhere she may have dreaded going. No wonder she suffered with crippling headaches during her childhood. Yet, she never let anyone see her struggles. She was determined to go on and refused to ask for help. "I never expressed how I felt," she recalled. "I always kept it in. I would go to school ... you would never know there was something wrong with me." It just goes to show why Rihanna is how she is today. Strong, determined and authentic, she is an inspiration to us all.

12 She's currently in a relationship

For someone like Rihanna, it's hard to stay single for long. So while she may have been off the market for a while, she has recently confirmed in an interview with Vogue that she is now in a relationship. After all that Drake drama that has been circulating in the news, it's nice to hear something positive and real. Not just tabloid gossip. And from what we're hearing, the star couldn't be happier. ''I used to feel guilty about taking personal time,'' she says, ''but I also think I never met someone who was worth it before.'' That's a smart way to put it and also relatable.

While she's a little reluctant to talk about her partner, we already know from paparazzi photos that she's connected to Hassan Jameel, a Saudi businessman.

Last year, she was spotted vacationing with him in Spain. On top of that, she also turned 30 this year and for the first time ever, she's learning to live in the moment. ''Even mentally, just to be away from my phone, to be in the moment, that has been key for my growth,'' she says. ''Now, when I come to work, I’m all in. Because before you know it, the years will go by. I’m glad I’m taking the time. I’m happy.''

11 She plays a hacker in the new Ocean's 8

If you haven't already heard, Rihanna has landed a role in the upcoming movie Ocean's 8, a new reincarnation of the Ocean's 11 franchise. Comprising of a star-studded cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling and Rihanna to name a few, it's a movie that's not to be missed. Ocean's 8 follows the story of an all-female crew who pull off a heist at the New York's Met Gala in a bid to steal a diamond necklace. But who's actually the brain behind this master plan? While Sandra Bullock will be leading the women on the heist, it looks like the hacking genius who is Rihanna could be the brainchild behind it all.

Eight Ball is the name of her character. And from what we've seen from the trailer, Rihanna is going to be playing a cool and quirky hacking genius. While this may seem like a big deal for the singer in terms of an acting role, this isn't the first movie Rihanna's been in. This is the End, Battleship, Home and Annie are just a few of the movies in which we've witnessed Rihanna's acting abilities. And just as you'd expect from this revolutionary woman, she nails her roles.

10 She and Drake aren't friends anymore

Ever wondered what happened between Rihanna and Drake? Well, Rihanna finally set the record straight in her interview with Vogue. They blessed the world with songs like ''Work'' and ''What's My Name,'' and kept us wondering as one of Hollywood's on-again-off-again couples. But according to Rihanna, the two no longer even have a friendship anymore.

The final straw came at the MTV VMA Awards when Drake declared his love for the singer while presenting her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Just a couple of months later, the pair split up and went their own ways. ''The VMAs is such a fan-focused awards show, so having that energy around me, and knowing the people who had received the award in the past, made it feel like a big deal,'' she says. ''Waiting through that speech was probably the most uncomfortable part. I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.'' When she was asked about where she and Drake stand now in terms of their friendship, her reply was: ''We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.'' In other words, Drihanna, AubRih or whatever name you have for them are totally, officially over. We barely got to enjoy them.

9 Rihanna's unusual preshow rituals

Every singer has their own unique set of preshow rituals. But Rihanna's rituals are not like everybody's elses. In addition to the conventional ones, she also has some pretty unorthodox preshow rituals like drinking alcohol before shows. ''I eat lozenges, steam my voice, do my makeup,'' she told Esquire in 2011. ''I Skype my vocal coach, and we sit there at the makeup table and do warm-ups for about a half hour.'' That's the normal part. Then, things start to get a little more fun. ''My personal assistant-slash-bartender brings me a shot that she dilutes with a little something so it’s not so harsh, like orange juice or soda water and lime,'' she said. ''I have to have it. I take it very seriously, so there is a level of anxiety, always. I overthink everything when it comes to my job. The drink calms my nerves. I sip it while I watch the opening act from my dressing room. Sometimes I go out into the audience. I put on a really big hoodie and sneak out there.'' We can't say we judge her. If it helps and it calms her nerves, go for it. It sounds like fun to us.

8 Her legs are worth $1 million

She's got killer pins for sure, but $1 million? That's how much Gillette thinks her legs are worth anyway. ''They named me this year’s Celebrity Legs of a Goddess, so along with the title comes an insurance for your legs of a million dollars,'' she told the Guardian. ''But I think I’m just normal. I think, ‘Do people really insure their legs for a million dollars?’ If it was my million dollars, I’d probably walk about in pants all day long.''

Rihanna, however, isn't the only celebrity in the world with insured body parts.

Actually, there is a celebrity with a higher price tag on her pins. Mariah Carey's legs are worth a stunning £500 million, according to Elle Magazine. Close in competition with Rihanna's legs are Tina Turner's which are said to be worth £1.5 million. If the idea of leg insurance is something you can't get your head around, wait until you hear about F1 driver Fernando Alsono's thumbs which are valued at £9 million. Julia Roberts and America Ferrera even have their smiles insured. Back to Rihanna, we guess it's understandable why Gillette insured them for $1 million. In comparison to the other insured body parts of celebs, this one seems perfectly normal.

7 Rihanna was a loner at high school

Everybody has a story to tell about high school. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad and sometimes they're surprising. When W Magazine asked Rihanna what high school was like for her, she gave the most unexpected answer. ''I was a bit of a loner at times,'' she says. Rihanna? A loner? How is that even possible? This is coming from the most famous pop star in the world. But in typical bad gal RiRi style, she found a way to deal with that loneliness. ''Cadets was my one outlet,'' she admits. ''I didn’t do any sports, I just did cadets. Little things that you learn in cadets follow you all through your life. Even the way I line my toiletries from tallest to smallest. The discipline really sticks with you. I enjoyed it. I kind of still am that same way. I like to be able to dip in and out of the scene. I like to dip in, but I like to dip out when I’m ready to be by myself and watch TV.'' So that is why she's so dedicated. Could cadets be one of the prime reasons behind her success? If so, every child needs to start enrolling ASAP.

6 She's a Claire's fan

She must have been just as gutted as us when she heard the news that Claire's Accessories had filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. That's because Rihanna is a big Claire's fan apparently. You would think this singer who's worth millions would be drowning herself in diamonds, not Claire's supplies.

But it seems Rihanna as a whole is pretty thrifty.

A trait she could have inherited from her mom. In an interview with Oprah, Rihanna revealed that her mom will return gifts if she feels they're too expensive. "My mom is very conservative with spending," Rihanna said. "I would send her something and she will research the price and send it right back to me.''

The apple doesn't fall from the tree, though. It seems like her mom Monica's thriftiness could have rubbed off on the singer. At least that's the impression we got when she told Vogue that she loves to wear cheap jewelry. "My jewelry's all fake — from Claire's. Or I get it from my mom's boutique in Barbados. Her shop's called FAB-U-LUS." Of course you can still see Rihanna bearing the likes of Cartier, but she doesn't feel too superior to wear Claire's jewellery. Claire's is the high street Cartier apparently.

5 She's the most successful artist over the last decade

Since 2005, Rihanna has sold over 62 million records. This makes her the most successful artist in the last decade. On top of that, she's also the first artist ever to receive five 3X platinum-selling digital singles. She even got tagged ''The Digital Download Queen,'' because to her songs have been downloaded over 75,000,000 times. When you take some time to look at her background, you can see that she's definitely earned the title of the most successful artist in 10 years.

Take her third album ''Good Girl Gone Bad'' (2007). It sold eight million copies worldwide and ended up being the year's third highest-selling album in the world and the eighth highest the following year. It also earned three number one Hot 100 hits. Then there's ''Rude Boy,'' her third single from ''Rated R,'' her fourth studio album. That became her sixth American number one hit. She actually became the only female in American history that had her first single shoot up to number one after the second single. As of 2011, she's earned nine number one Hot 100 singles. All of these incredible accomplishments have made Rihanna the most successful female singer of the last decade. She's achieved more than some musicians do in a lifetime.

4 She was signed by Jay-Z

At just 16 years old, Rihanna left Barbados to move in with music producer Evan Rodgers who was awed by the super talented soon-to-be-superstar and his wife in Connecticut. The plan was to work together on a demo album. Rihanna saw it as a new beginning and the chance to start a new life. "When I left Barbados, I didn't look back," she recalled. "I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America."

The following year, Rogers landed her an audition for Def Jam Records and its president Jay-Z.

"I was in the lobby just shaking," she remembered. "I remember staring into everybody's eyes in the room while I was singing, and at that point, I was fearless. But the minute I stopped singing, I was like, 'Oh my God, Jay-Z is sitting right in front of me.'" The legendary hip-hop star was equally as wowed by her performance and he signed her the same day, which is almost unheard of in the music business. Only a few months later, Rihanna released her first single ''Pon de Replay'' and the rest is...well, history. We don't really need to tell you the rest of the story because you already know it. We just wanted to inform you that it was actually Jay-Z who discovered her.

3 She doesn't consider herself a role model

Beautiful, talented, honest, authentic and wild all at the same time, what's not to admire? Rihanna is a perfect role model for young women. Most people would agree, except Rihanna herself. It's not that she doesn't think she's a good role model. She just doesn't like the title and the connotations that come with it.

Since she was 17, Rihanna has been in the limelight for her talents so she's accustomed to the pressures that have been thrust on her. Still, she isn't too keen on the idea of being called a role model. Even today, the title doesn't sit right with her, in spite of what the rest of the world thinks. ''That title was put on me when I was just finding my way, making mistakes in front of the world. I didn’t think it was fair,'' she told Vogue. ''Now I understand the concept, but at that time I was the same age as the girls who were looking up to me. And that’s a really hard place to be in as a teenager.''

Even Cate Blanchett, her co-star in Ocean's 8, appears spellbound by Rihanna's air of self confidence describing her as ''like the Sphinx. She is ancient, mysterious, unique, wicked.''

2 She's had over 150 hairstyles

Rihanna is famous for her ever-changing hairstyles. Since she first emerged on the music scene, we've hardly been able to keep up with the hairstyles Rihanna has sported. Fashion Lifestyle decided to do the math and they discovered that she's actually worn over 150 hairstyles since 2005, when her music career first took off. That's a lot of hairstyles! Moreover, that number is bound to keep growing.

Rihanna is a style chameleon.

She's not someone who remains stationary. She likes to experiment and that's a big part of why people adore her. She isn't afraid to be bold or play around with different hairstyles. If only we could be so daring. Her trademark hairstyles are her long straight brown (2006), medium black bob (2007) and we can't forget her cropped look (2008). Of course, those styles keep on expanding and she's had far many more trademarks since then. Certainly Rihanna is an icon, but it extends past her music and fashion to whatever she decides to do with her beauty look. (It's part of the reason Fenty Beauty is crushing the competition.) At the moment, she looks like she's sporting more of a long brown wavy do. But for all we know that could have changed by now. When it comes to Rihanna, nothing is the same for long. Things are always changing. And we're not just talking about her hair!

1 She's a huge Star Trek fan

Rihanna isn't afraid to reveal her likes and dislikes. One of the many reasons people love and admire Rihanna is because she isn't afraid to be herself. In that sense, the woman is fearless. Now that may sound like nothing out of the ordinary. But the truth is, it's truly extraordinary. Not many people are their true, authentic selves. That's why we love people who are and Rihanna is the definition of authentic. She wasn't, for instance, in the least bit shy in admitting that she's a big Star Trek fan. ''This is something that's been a part of me since my childhood, it's never left me, I love Star Trek,'' she said. ''It was automatic. I would do anything in terms of music. It's such a big deal not only as a fan, as a musician... because Star Trek is such a big deal across the globe.'' On the topic of things she likes, she's also a big Janet Jackson fan. Erm...what woman isn't? ''Janet Jackson was one of the first female pop icons that I could relate to, she was so vibrant, she had so much energy. She still has power. I've seen her on stage, and she can stand there for 20 minutes and have the whole arena scream at her. You have to love Janet.''
