Real Life Jedis Give Lightsaber Classes As Mindful Meditation

Lightsaber combat classes taught by real-life “Jedis” can be the mindful meditation method perfect for Star Wars fans. The class has a focus on the psychological aspect—making it different from classes elsewhere. After all, one must be in tune with the Force if one is to wield a lightsaber.

Martial arts focus on so much more than the actual combat. A true martial artist will aim to master their control over both the spiritual and physical aspects of their life, and this requires a lot of mindfulness, mediation, and self-reflection. All these are also important aspects of a Jedi’s life, so it is not a surprise that lightsaber combat has become a martial art we can practice in real life.

Dave Holden holds weekly lightsaber-battling classes for his students, or more appropriately named “Padawans.” Holden comes from a martial arts background of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), and he uses this training to teach Jedi combat. Every lesson starts with a kind of meditation that helps student relax and let go of the issues causing them stress. After this, Holden commences with the Jedi battling skills. Each hour-long session costs about $8 with lightsabers provided. The program is only around two years old, yet the area already has many students of the intergalactic battle-meditation martial art.

The combat can only be perfected if the Jedi does not succumb to the Dark Side, so mindfulness needs to be practiced. This means that one must be able to be present in the here-and-now rather than constantly worrying about the future. If one spends time being mindful and relaxing the mind and body, then the peace of mind required to fight battles (literally and metaphorically) is obtained.

Instead of simply learning how to recreate the epic and iconic battles, Star Wars fans can learn how to become a true Jedi: a master of the body, mind, and soul. Holden’s classes teach lightsaber combat like a true martial art, and this is probably the best way to learn how to wield a lightsaber. A true Jedi wouldn’t use their combat skills simply for fighting; that’s going over to the Dark Side.
