If you want a pet that you can invest in and that won’t end up passing away after a couple of years, a guinea pig is a great choice. Unlike many rodents who only live 2-3 years, such as rats and gerbils, guinea pigs tend to live 5-7 years.

Cats and especially dogs can be pretty high-maintenance. With a dog, you need to be able to let the dog out to use the bathroom at least a few times a day, and this can be difficult if you’re busy or doesn't have a yard. Daily walks and longer interactions are also necessary. If you work full-time, a guinea pig makes sense as a pet. You can feed them in the morning and feel at ease knowing they will be all right the whole day at work while you're away.

8 THEY ARE ALSO GOOD FAMILY PETS AND GOOD WITH KIDS

Children often love small pets as they are very, very cute. But, rabbits tend to be somewhat fragile and other small rodents like hamsters can be skittish. 7 THEY RARELY BITE

One concern many people have when getting a rodent is the issue of biting. Hamsters are somewhat notorious for biting, not that they don’t make good pets, too. Guinea pigs are not prone to bite, and it is not a behavior they do often. Unless they are very scared or provoked, it’s unlikely a guinea pig will try to bite you or show aggression in this way. At most, they may slightly nibble as they smell you to figure out what you are and what you smell and taste like.
