Stress is something that we all experience sometimes, even when we try our best to stay super calm. Any number of things can upset us on any given day, from a subway delay to getting stuck in traffic to our best friend canceling our dinner plans. Sure, we know that we should chill out more and not get so worked up, but that can be tough to actually practice that on a regular basis. Our days are very packed and there doesn't always seem like a moment to breathe or even enjoy ourselves.
We hear that we should go to yoga classes to de-stress and take more time for ourselves. That's great but it might not be super practical when we have a busy work week. What can we do when we need to de-stress ASAP? Here are 7 things you can do to relieve stress that take 3 minutes or less.
7 Text That One Person Who Is Always Positive
You definitely have someone in your life who seems to be in a good mood no matter what is going on. You might not be able to believe how positive they always are, but that's just the way that they are, and you should take advantage of that.
When you need to feel less stressed ASAP, you can text that one person who is always going to make you feel better. This could be your sister, brother, best friend, college roomie, boyfriend, girlfriend – it's literally anyone. If they put a smile on your face and make you realize that things aren't so bad, that's what is important.
6 Take A Few Deep Breaths
Deep breathing is something that seems so simple and obvious but you might not remember to do this when you're experiencing a stressful day or a stressful moment in your day.
Taking a few deep breaths won't take more than a few minutes (and might not even take more than one minute). Yet it's going to be so effective at making you feel better. Basically, it'll make you feel calmer and like you can take on the day.
5 Think About Something That Makes You Happy
There are some things that make us universally happy, like bacon or coffee or avocado toast, or the season premiere of our favorite show. Think about something that makes you happy when you need to de-stress and in under three minutes, you'll be smiling and looking forward to something.
Maybe you've got a packed social weekend coming up and that's going to be both fun and relaxing, or maybe you've got a free evening tonight and are planning on ordering pizza and watching a bunch of movies. Think about something that will cheer you up instantly and you'll be thinking, "Why was I getting so worked up?"
4 Meditate For One Minute
Meditation, like yoga, is just one of those things that people think helps us feel less stressed. Not everyone loves it – some people think that it's dull or super hard to do – but the people that love it really, really adore it. It's part of their regular routine and something that they do every single day. Meditation can be done in the morning when you wake up, at night before you go to sleep, or literally any time that you need it.
Whether or not you want to take up a daily meditation practice, it can't hurt to meditate for one minute when you feel stressed out. Find a place without distractions and noise, close your eyes, and just clear your mind. You can even do this in your office bathroom.
3 Sniff Some Essential Oils
Essential oils are being talked about more and more. They are basically oils that you can smell and they make you feel better and more peaceful.
You can start small and buy one or two types of essential oils, like lavender, and if you feel anxious during the course of your work day, it's pretty simple to take a few seconds and give this oil a sniff.
If you don't want your co-workers looking on, then you can definitely take a quick bathroom break, but chances are, they'll be interested in what you're doing. You could spread the peaceful word about essential oils.
2 Take The Saying "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff To Heart"
If you think about the one person you know who never seems to stress out, the truth is that they might feel stressed from time to time, but you just can't tell. Their secret? It's that they "don't sweat the small stuff" as the popular saying goes.
When you realize that not everything is worth worrying about or even thinking about, you really do feel calmer and happier. So what if you were stuck in traffic for ten minutes this morning? Who cares if you didn't pack your lunch and you had to buy it instead? It really is all going to be okay and you can still conquer your day and be happy and productive. It might take a few days to start thinking this way, but you can definitely start being more positive, and it'll help a lot in terms of lowering your stress levels longterm.
1 Write Down An "Absolutely" To-Do List
It can be really stressful to think about all of the things that you have to get done today, this week, and even this month. It's best to start small and think about today. There's no way that you can de-stress until you figure out what is absolutely necessary to get done and what you can push back to tomorrow or even next week.
Write down an "absolutely" to-do list, which is another thing that you can do in under three minutes to stop stressing out. You'll quickly realize what you can focus on and what you can leave for another day. Don't you feel better already?
