It was in December of 2010 that Storage Wars started on the A&E Network. Really, none of us that are fans have looked back since and for very good reason. Talk about originality! When it premiered, no one had seen anything like it since, and it not only catapulted the popularity of the show and its stars but the network as well, that up until that point had been pretty much focused on biographies and other documentaries. They had reality TV, yes, but nothing really as captivating as what they had unleashed that cold night in December of 2010.
All of the stars are charismatic in their own way, but perhaps the most charismatic of all is none other than Barry Weiss, the smooth-talking, suave and savvy businessman that looks like he belongs on the set of a Martin Scorsese picture. He definitely has drawn a lot of fans to the show and there are a plethora of reasons why.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some interesting facts about the man, the myth and the legend. So, who’s in for some digging into Barry’s personal storage unit? Going once … going twice … and sold, to the dude hunched over his desk reading The Things when he should be working on that presentation!
15 HE'S A "BIKE GUY"
A fair amount of information is out there regarding this man, and a lot of it has to do with the multitude of cars he's found, owns and collects. But perhaps a little less known is his utter love of motorcycles. And when it comes to impressive steeds, the older and rarer, the better, even if some of the bikes in question tend to lean toward the weird and eccentric, he doesn't seem to mind.
After all, those words... weird and eccentric, describe even the man himself... in a good way of course. Sometimes being weird is the best way to be original. And Barry Weiss is definitely an original; no doubt about that.
14 GOT HIS START AT 15
Many who spend their lives doing things they love seem to have gotten their start at a young age; especially those that turn out to be quite good at what they do. Barry Weiss is definitely good at what he does and he proves it time and time again.
He actually started sharpening it at the tender age of fifteen. And when individuals start out that young, in what is called their formative years, they become something quite special at what they do before the end. We can just picture him at fifteen, can't we... slicked hair, glasses, only he's wearing sneakers instead of the loafers we're accustomed to seeing him in.
13 HIS 1947 COWBOY CADILLAC
Now talk about classic cars! Be prepared, because the man has got quite a few. He's even found an incredible amount of them, as has been seen on the show. Known as the most famous car in Los Angeles, pretty much every collector worth his salt would want to get his hands on this incredible piece of machinery. But people are going to have to get in line, should Barry want to sell it, but we don't think that all too likely, as it's one of the rarest cars on earth.
He's actually gone on record as saying that "this ride will never be for sale." It was built by famed custom car fabricator Frank Derosa. Derosa is famous for having built many custom cars like this one here.
12 THE TIM BURTON BATMOBILE
Perhaps the Batmobile is one of the most incredible vehicles ever to be seen on film. The famed Tumbler of the Christopher Nolan series of Batman films probably takes the cake as far as popularity is concerned, but the vehicle pictured here, that was featured in the Tim Burton versions of the Batman films was also quite sought after and enticed many to dream one day driving it.
It truly is a spectacular ride, or at least it always seemed to be. Besides, who wouldn't want to ride around in Batman's car? We know we would... even if it was for thirty seconds. Why is this car in this article you ask? Well, because our main man Barry owns it! More on this incredible vehicle later in the article, so keep reading.
11 HIS LINCOLN ZEPHYR
You won't really see a bunch of Challengers and Lambos in his garage, or at least you won't see many. Barry's tastes are a tad more refined, as we can see here with this Zephyr. It's definitely an eye-catcher and is a machine worthy of our dropped jaws and staggering speech.
It'll have us losing our concentration as we ... wait, where was I going with this? Anyways, Barry's got great taste. Let's move on, shall we?
10 HE'S GOT A CLASSIC 1974 TRIUMPH TRACKMASTER 750
And speaking of epic and great taste, a man who owns a classic Triumph motorcycle is a man who knows his motorcycles and knows his motorcycles well. Triumph probably is the name most trusted by motorbike aficionados and the name can rest well among such names as Indian, Harley Davidson, and Kawasaki respectively (those that were fabricated before the company went under in the eighties, that is).
Barry is such a man (was there ever really a question?), and he owns the beauty pictured above. It truly is an awesome machine and is worthy of any collector's time and money.
9 THE INFAMOUS BATMOBILE INCIDENT
And the moment you've all been waiting for has arrived! The infamous Batmobile incident! This one here is actually quite cringe-worthy for you gearheads out there, as some damage was actually done to the famed vehicle. It was in an episode of Barry'd Treasure, another of his TV appearances and shows, that he visited a toy collector in hopes of acquiring a few collectibles.
He actually brought his Batmobile along for the ride, but it would prove to be a mistake, as number 1: it was actually quite uncomfortable to ride around in (who would have known?) and 2: he actually got into a bit of a fender bender. He clipped the rear bumper and yes... the damage was made.
8 MADE HIS FORTUNE SELLING PRODUCE
Everyone's gotta start somewhere, and for this man who now makes his deals at the houses and estates of serious collectors, he made his money, his millions of dollars in fact, selling produce, wholesale, and at the end of the day, it's as great a way to make money as anything else. But who knew that he could make that much in that field?
Okay, we're sure that there are a number of you out there that can get technical and take out charts and prove just how, but there is a time and a place, folks. For now, let's just leave it up to wonder and amazement, shall we? Why not?
7 HE'S GOT A 1951 BSA CUSTOM
For the love of all that is good on this green earth of ours, the man has got a BSA of all bikes. That isn't your regular motorbike, folks. This one's a tad more special than what you're used to seeing at a collector's place. You're likely to see one of these at an auction of a rich estate, or thereabouts.
Barry's been to his fair share of those himself (he doesn't just dig around in dusty, old storage units), and has pulled out quite a few incredible relics like the one you keep stopping to read to gaze upon. It's okay, I forgive you the momentary lapse in concentration. I myself had a hard enough time writing this entry. Look at that frame!
6 THE INFAMOUS BONE GLOVES
If you remember anything about his days on Storage Wars, then chances are, you'll remember him wearing these gloves pictured here. Sometimes, a television personality becomes famous for the things he wears, and quite famous at that. It almost becomes like a character trait in the eyes of the viewer, one associated with that particular character and boy did these become Barry Weiss.
For Barry, however, they were part talisman and part precaution. At first, he wore them to protect himself from the germs or whatever he would come across in a particular storage unit, but in time they became luck and soon, they became part of what would become his "character," or on-screen persona.
5 HE ONLY DID 4 SEASONS ON STORAGE WARS
That's not long at all for a person to be on a show, even a successful one. But the impact he left is a testament to how much star quality he has. He is still one of the most recognizable stars from the show and the memories that played out with him at the epicenter are still what most fans of the show talk about and remember.
And why not? Talk about scene-stealing talent, eh? We've talked about his star power before and it is unmistakable. He could have probably enjoyed a career in Hollywood had he wanted to take a turn at it. He went on to do a multitude of other things, including the spin-off of the show: Barry'd Treasure.
4 HE ALWAYS GETS HIS FINDS APPRAISED
He isn't an egotistical man by any means. He's a man of humility and he knows when something is over his head. Barry Weiss wouldn't go around stating that he knew about something if he didn't, therefore by that same token, often, fans of the show will notice that he can be seen going to an appraiser to verify whether what he found is of importance or if he found himself a dud worth pretty much less than a dollar store birthday card.
About seven times out of ten, he wins out and at the end of the day that isn't too bad at all. Some of us never find any artifacts of value.
3 HIS 1958 GILERA
Earlier, we mentioned that some of his tastes border on the peculiar, and while there's nothing wrong with that, this bike is as strange as it is rare... and expensive of course. But sometimes, money is no question, especially when you know how to haggle and deal. And we know that Barry is definitely an expert at that.
The Gilera itself was designed in Italy back in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera and it morphed and transformed as the years progressed. This one, in particular, is quite different from other models, particularly the obvious: the front end. Interestingly enough, the standard '58 doesn't look like this one, hence it's a rarity.
2 BARRY'S KNACK FOR COMEDY In The Form Of Cars
The truth about this one is that Barry didn't actually own this one, but it was used as a prop and a comedic device to show Barry's comedic side. And speaking of comedy, Barry has got a flair for that as well. We can see him battling it out with the best of them on the big screen, making us laugh every minute. After all, he was a riot in all his TV shows, making our tummies quiver until we were bent at the waist in pain. Better than an abdominal workout, we tell you.
But all kidding aside, you can't teach timing like that. He was always ready with a one-liner, and he did have the best ones. It's unclear if he came up with those lines or if they were written for him. Regardless, his delivery was spot on.
1 HE CAN SOMETIMES BRING OUT THE BEST AND WORST IN HIS PEERS
For fans of the show, Storage Wars that is, they'd remember that the cast didn't always get along, especially when vying for the same storage units, salivating and expectantly waiting to see what lay within.
Of course, vehicles weren't all that was found in those units, and they were all experts at making the big deal, but what they all had in common was a pretty decent amount of money. But when certain personalities didn't get the final bid, they were pretty sour about it and often enough, they took their frustrations out on poor Barry. He was great though, he'd always let it roll right off his shoulders, a class act until the end of his time on the show.
