*Spoilers for After Life season one and two ahead*

Premiered in 2019, After Life sees Gervais as Tony, a journalist with a local paper grieving his beloved wife Lisa, played by Kerry Godliman.

Ricky Gervais Has Written A Third Season Of ‘After Life’ During Lockdown

After contemplating suicide, an embittered Tony seeks revenge for Lisa’s untimely death by being selfish and careless with those around him.

In the second season, dropped on the streaming service in 2020, Tony redeems himself by trying to be kind and change the lives of his loved ones for the better.

At the end of this second installment, he contemplates suicide after experiencing yet another loss. However, he is saved by Emma (Ashley Jensen), a nurse who has been his on-off romantic interest since season one.

Despite the open, hopeful ending worked well as a conclusion, Netflix renewed After Life for another season. Gervais has already written it, making the most of the time spent in isolation.

“I’ve sort of written it,” Gervais told Jimmy Fallon.

“I had more time this year than I thought I’d have,” he continued.

Gervais Wasn’t On Board With A Third Season Originally

Gervais also voiced his initial doubts on making another season.

“I wasn’t sure about it,” he said.

“I knew Netflix wanted a third season but, you know, they would because the first two were successful but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t an unwanted encore,” he added.

Once season two premiered, Netflix called Gervais confirming they wanted to do a third season. The loyalty of his fans convinced him going for another season was the good choice.

According to the comedian, a third installment will probably be the show's final season.

"You never say never but you put those things out there to make you remember because it's tempting, it's very tempting," he told The Sun last year.

"The audience think they want another one but they don't know, they're not sure, so you’ve got to be careful.”
