8 Robert Downey Jr. And Susan Downey Met On Set

When Robert Downey Jr. met Susan Levin in 2003, she was working on her first full-credit job as a producer in the movie Gothika, directed by Joel Silver. Much like Robert, she'd had impressive success prior to that movie. Since 1999, she had been the vice president of production at Silver Pictures, but her first solo gig was a huge deal. So, she was understandably apprehensive about getting involved with a member of the cast. Plus, when she met RDJ, it wasn't exactly love at first sight. "Not even a little bit," she confirmed laughing. "The main thing I remember about meeting him was thinking how strange he was." She didn't think it was a bad quality, though, and as she got to know him, her initial trepidations were dismissed.

7 Something That Caught Susan Downey's Attention

Before Susan even saw Robert as anything more than a co-worker, he caught her attention with his funny quirks. There was a particular moment that makes the producer laugh to this day.

"We were up in Montreal prepping for Gothika, and we had lunch with the director and Halle Berry," Susan remembers with a smile. "Everybody else ordered Japanese, but Robert told us how oatmeal was the 'superfood.' He brought his own packets of oatmeal to have at lunch. And he had this box of various herbs and stuff. And then he started doing these yoga moves. I mean, he was interesting but weird."

6 Susan Downey Didn't Realize Their First Date Was A Date

When in an interview with Extra TV, RDJ and Susan were asked about their first date, they were surprised to find they had different answers. That was when Robert found out that, while she was starting to get interested in him, she didn't realize when he first asked her out to dinner that he meant it as a date.

They had a good laugh talking about it and remembering how Susan thought it was weird that they didn't wait for the rest of the cast and crew when they would normally all go out to eat together. Oh, well. It seems to have worked out anyway.

5 According To Robert Downey Jr., His Wife Saved His Life

Robert has always been very open about his struggles with addiction and how it almost killed him more than once. He even had to spend some time in jail because of it, and while he had been trying to quit when he met Susan, it was his partner's support and determination that he credits with saving his life. Susan knew nothing about drugs, having always stayed away from any potentially harmful substance including alcohol, so she made it clear to Robert that she would not tolerate any form of drug use. To his credit, Robert took her very seriously and did everything in his power to put an end to his previous dark lifestyle. Being with Susan turned out to be a thousand times more fulfilling.

"I guess the only way to explain it is that I've become more like her. I'm still trying to figure out what happened," he said. "Whatever I was hungry for when I met Susan, I couldn't have known how much more satisfying what I got would be."

4 Susan Downey Never Doubted Robert Downey Jr. Was The One

Admittedly, it took her a while to accept the idea of dating a co-worker, but once she started her relationship with Robert, Susan never doubted that he was the one. He was unlike anyone she'd ever dated, and while he had a past that was irreconcilable with her lifestyle, he had left it behind and learned from it, becoming a man that took her breath away. She said that she knew three months in that he was the love of her life. She called it a gut feeling. And she obviously was right.

3 Neither Of Them Was Too Interested In Relationships

"When I used to hear, like 'It's my parents' 175th wedding anniversary,' I used to think, 'No. I can't. I just can't.' I used to have a bit of disdain for partnership, and I thought that I had carved my path in the other direction, but..." Robert couldn't finish his sentence without laughing, because look how that worked out.

But he wasn't the only one life had other plans for. While Susan was younger than Robert when they met (she was 30, he was 38), marriage was not something she was interested in. She didn't share Robert's scorn for relationships, but she was so focused on her career that falling in love never even crossed her mind. There's something so beautiful about the way they found each other without even trying.

2 Robert Downey Jr. And Susan Downey Make Each Other Better

Robert and Susan have always maintained their independence, but they're the first to say that what they can do together surpasses their expectations every time. Aside from the fact that they obviously love each other deeply, their professional and personal chemistry is unparalleled. That's why they created their production company, Team Downey, which Robert has put most of his energy into since departing the MCU. With Robert acting and Susan producing, they made some of the most incredible movies of the past few years. Robert has described what happens when they're together as becoming a "third thing" that has the best of them both, which is simply beautiful.

1 Robert Downey Jr. And Susan Downey's 'Two-Week' Rule

This is probably the most wholesome fact on the list. The couple came to an agreement early in their relationship called the two-week rule. Knowing they both have demanding schedules, this rule was meant to prevent neglecting each other. It basically stated that, no matter what, they wouldn't be apart for more than two weeks. Soon, however, it turned into the one-week rule. And now they just don't leave the other unless they absolutely have to. Their producing company came up, partially, so that their work wouldn't keep them apart.

"Our feeling was, if we wanted to spend time together, have a life together, then we should just go ahead and make movies together," Susan explained.

Things seem to be going beautifully for these lovebirds, and we wish them many more years of happiness.
