At this point, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is widely known as one of the most successful and beloved cult films ever made. However, when looking back at the film’s legacy, it is important to note that virtually nobody expected The Rocky Horror Picture Show to go down in history the way it has.

Back when The Rocky Horror Picture Show was being produced, there wasn’t a major studio that was willing to give the film’s producers lots of money to spend on it. In fact, according to IMDb, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was produced for only $1.2 million. Considering the amazing sets that can be seen in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the money it must have cost to produce the music, that didn’t leave a lot of money for everything else. As a result, it likely won’t surprise anyone that there wasn’t enough money to make things luxurious for The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s cast and crew behind the scenes.

Unfortunately for Susan Sarandon, it turns out that she paid a hefty price for the shortcuts that were taken behind the scenes during the Rocky Horror Picture Show’s production. In 2017, Susan Sarandon appeared on The Rachel Ray Show and spoke about what it was like to make The Rocky Horror Picture Show. As it turns out, Sarandon got very sick while making The Rocky Horror Picture Show due to the environment she was in.

"Here’s a cautionary tale," she says. "If you’re going to be months in London in the winter with a set where the roof is leaking, do not be in your underpants and bra. I got pneumonia and was performing a lot of it sick.” From there, Susan Sarandon went on to explain that The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s producers tried their best to take care of her while she was sick but that wound up going horribly awry.

“So the doctors said, 'She can come, but you have to find some place where it's warm.' So, they put a screen around a space heater, and the whole thing caught on fire. Luckily, there was nobody in there. And my trailer also caught on fire later. So, it was an eventful shoot.” Fortunately, Susan Sarandon clarified that she looks back on making The Rocky Horror Picture Show with fondness before stating that in reality, it was no picnic for her. “When I look at it, I think, 'We had a blast.' But actually, it was hard!"
