15 Being Half-Giant Doesn't Just Make Him Tall, Hagrid Is Resistant To Many Spells And Has Incredible Strength

As we all know, Hagrid is not technically permitted to use any magic. However, he's got some pretty amazing skills that the Ministry could simply never stop him from using. Not only does his giant's blood give him size, but it's also rendered him extremely resistant to stunning spells and a ton of dark magic. We also can't forget that he's stronger than any superhero out there.

14 Robbie Coltrane Was Rowling's First Choice For Hagrid

There were some pretty huge names interested in playing the lovable Hagrid when the film series was first announced. However, Rowling famously demanded that only British actors be cast, so no American Hollywood star was going to land the role. That being said, it was unlikely they would anyway, because Rowling had her heart set on Bond actor, Robbie Coltrane from the beginning.

13 Hagrid Is Too Big To Ride A Broomstick, But You Can See Him Do So In A Video Game

12 He's A Gryffindor Through And Through

It may have never occured to anyone to wonder what house Hagrid had been sorted into before being expelled for the whole Chamber of Secrets debacle. 11 Hagrid And Harry Are Both Orphans

Here is a little background for those who have really only watched the movies. Hagrid's giantess mother took off when he was just a baby, so he was left to be raised by his father who was a 'tiny bloke', but a good man all the same. When Hagrid was 12, his father passed away leaving him an orphan.

10 Believe It Or Not, Hagrid Was Made Much Smaller For The Movies

Obviously, Hagrid is huge even in the films. However, when going back and reading his initial description in the books, it's clear that he was shrunken down considerably to fit the movie screens. In the words of J.K. Rowling, Hagrid had "hands the size of trash can lids." His height is also noted at 11 1/2 feet tall.

9 Robin Williams Really Wanted To Play The Role

We have no doubt that Robin Williams would have been able to do great things with the role of Hagrid. He actually made a call out to the filmmakers to express his interest, but thanks to J.K.'s British-only rule, the legendary actor was turned down. That being said, Robbie Coltrane did a fantastic job.

8 J.K. Rowling Based His Character On A Real-Life Biker

Coltrane revealed how Rowling explained the man behind Hagrid's inspiration, "He used to get off of his Harley and walk towards the bar. People would move like ants out of his way. He would grab his pint, find a seat and say: ‘I don’t know about you, but the petunias this year are very bad.’ He was a gardener but he had fists like hams. He had a gentle heart."

7 Before Being Placed In His Umbrella, Hagrid's Wand Was 6 Inches And Made Of Oak

For most characters, we were given a full account of what their wands looked like and what they were made of. However, by the time we met Hagrid, he already had the remaining broken piece of his wand stashed inside of his umbrella. That being said, we do know that once upon a time, it was 6 inches, made of oak and also quite bendy!

6 Even Without Magic, Hagrid Was An Important Member Of The Original Order Of The Phoenix

Hagrid may not have been able to lend a wand to help out the Order of the Phoenix, but there was no way he wasn't getting in on an organization founded by Albus Dumbledore. While Hagrid obviously couldn't cast spells with the rest of them, he was entrusted with other important tasks, such as rescuing Harry on that fateful night.

5 2 Different Actors Played Hagrid Throughout The Films

While Robbie Coltrane was always the face of Hagrid, he wasn't actually large enough to be able to play the role in every scene. So, Martin Bayfield, a former Rugby player who stands at 6 feet 10 inches, was hired to play Coltrane's body double throughout the films.

4 Hagrid Is Older Than You May Think, His Birthday Is December 6th, 1928

Since author J.K. Rowling continues to tweet and update information on Pottermore, there is always new fun things to learn about our favorite characters. One fun fact that was given to us after the series ended, was Hagrid's birthday. Born on December 6th, 1928, Hagrid was actually much older than he appeared in the films. With that DOB, Hagrid would have been 70 in Deathly Hallows.

3 Rowling Revealed That Hagrid And Dumbledore Are Meant To Represent The Two Sides Of Harry's Ideal Father Figure

Harry was in desperate need of a father figure by the time he was entering his first year at Hogwarts. Rowling has revealed that Hagrid and Dumbledore are both meant to be this for Harry, "both hugely important to Harry, seem to me to represent two sides of the ideal father figure he seeks; the former is warm, practical and wild, the latter impressive, intellectual, and somewhat detached."

2 He May Love Giant Spiders And Dragons, But Hagrid Doesn't Like Cats

For years, many wondered if this was because of the sad childhood he had, but Rowling herself has since cleared things up in a tweet, "Hagrid couldn't produce a Patronus.
