10 Lars and the Real Girl  - 7.3

Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl

No one can ever claim that Ryan Gosling doesn't choose unique projects to work on and one of his most unique movies may so happen to be his weirdest as well. He stars as the title character, Lars, who pursues a romantic relationship with a life-sized doll that he buys on the internet and talks to like a real person, dragging it all around town.

Despite sounding like the synopsis for a horror movie made in 1960, the charm of Gosling turns this into a cute comedy. This picture also earned Gosling his first Golden Globe nod and an Oscar nomination for the film's script.

9 The Place Beyond the Pines - 7.3

Ryan Gosling And Eva Mendes In The Place Beyond The Pines

Despite only being ranked at number nine, The Place Beyond the Pines is arguably the most significant film on this list and maybe even of Gosling's life for the fact that it was here that he met his future girlfriend - co-star Eva Mendes - on the set. 9 years since filming wrapped up in 2011, they're still together.

Beautiful real-life love stories aside, this is just genuinely a great movie as both compelling thrilling and a complex story laced in themes of sons paying for the sins of their fathers.

8 Blue Valentine - 7.4

Gosling's career truly started to take a turn upon the release of Blue Valentine. At the time an underground star and indie darling, it should come as no surprise why everyone in mainstream Tinseltown suddenly wanted to work with him after seeing his heartbreaking Golden Globe-nominated performance.

His chemistry with co-star and fellow Golden Globe nominee Michelle Williams sizzles through the screen. Watching their characters slowly fall out of love throughout the picture is an emotionally resonating sight.

7 Crazy, Stupid, Love - 7.4

A year after Blue Valentine, 2011 proved to be Ryan Gosling's breakout year as he starred in three movies that all were successes in their own right. However, it was Crazy, Stupid, Love that truly established him as not only a Hollywood superstar but a sex symbol.

He plays a pick-up artist recruited by a recently divorced Steve Carell who hires Gosling to help him woo women, all while Gosling tries to woo Carell's daughter - Emma Stone - in his off time. Gosling's charisma and wit are on full display in this romantic comedy.

6 The Nice Guys - 7.4

The Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling

After starring in a streak of serious and dark films, Gosling decided to lighten up with a buddy cop movie from the same director who gave us Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3. He plays a 70s era Los Angeles private investigator forced to work with another P.I. played by Russell Crowe to investigate the disappearance of a little girl.

Fun Fact: Gosling smoked so many cigarettes as his character during the making of this movie that it convinced him to give up smoking entirely. But risking his lungs for the sake of making an entertaining comedy? Fans say it was worth it.

5 Drive - 7.8

Almost a decade since it first hit theaters, Drive has earned its place in cinematic iconography to call it a modern-day classic. The hammer, Gosling's scorpion jacket, the scorpion metaphors, the chase sequences: all factors that stick with finds in their memory to this day.

For those who missed this during its original release in 2011, Drive follows Driver, played by Ryan Gosling, as a part-time criminal getaway driver, part-time Hollywood stuntman who tries to get his neighbor - Carey Mulligan - out of a deadly jam.

4 The Big Short - 7.8

It's surprising to think that The Big Short didn't offer Gosling another Oscar or Golden Globe nomination under his belt. Then again, perhaps it's how to stand out in a cast littered with mega-stars like Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Steve Carell.

But together, the ensemble cast makes the film as a whole shine as a smartly written and sharply biting commentary on the 2008 house market crash. The film doesn't get lost in its jargon to the point it's incomprehensible and it's tongue in cheek enough to be downright hilarious.

3 The Notebook - 7.8

This is the film that really kickstarted Ryan Gosling's career. It wasn't quite a breakout moment for his career, but it was the first time that eyes were on him as romcom lovers absolutely adored The Notebook.

Much of The Notebook's $116.1 million surprise box office success can be attributed to the film playing into classic melodrama, but more than anything, it is because Gosling had excellent chemistry with Rachel McAdams. They gripped viewers tight and 16 years later still refuse to let go yet.

2 La La Land - 8

While La La Land failed to win the Best Picture Oscar in favor of Moonlight, it did win Best Director which technically marks it as the second-best movie of the year. The film serves as a sort of ode to Hollywood and the classic musical genre which spawned out of the place.

Ryan Gosling and Oscar winner Emma Stone use the medium to their utmost potential as a pair of insanely charming dance partners. This marked the duo's third onscreen pairing together and if they keep it, classic movies will keep rolling.

1 Blade Runner 2049 - 8

It's been a couple of years since we saw Ryan Gosling at the movie theater for a big feature, but he certainly left us with a bang given that one of his last released films is - according to IMDB - is the best movie on his résumé.

The film was the long-anticipated sequel to the 1982 classic. Although Gosling is no Harrison Ford, he certainly made for a compelling protagonist. Even better, a rounded out supporting cast and dazzling visual effects made this Oscar winner one of the best movies of 2017.
