Sadie Sink Almost Lost The Role Of Max Mayfield

One of the most special, heartwarming aspects within Stranger Things is the fact that the audience is watching a group of children grows up as the seasons progress. Accurate casting played a large part in the success of the TV series.

Unfortunately, Sadie Sink was originally condemned to appear "too old" for the part of Max Mayfield, despite being close in age to her character. Sadie Sink was interviewed by Annika Lautens for Fashion Magazine in late July 2022. Upon sharing the depth of Max's character and how much it meant to her, she discussed how she had to beg and plead for another chance at scoring the part.

"I just begged and pleaded with them to give me more material so I could show them something fresh," Sadie Sink shared in an interview with Fashion Magazine

She explained how she simply would not accept the rejection, knowing she was the perfect fit for the character. In another interview with Teen Vogue, she went into further detail about the audition process.

Sadie said that the process took around a month, and she had landed the part after doing a chemistry reading with Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matazarro, who play Max's love interest, Lucas, and a cherished comedic relief, Dustin, respectively.

"I wanna say it took place over a month. I think at one point they thought I was gonna be too old but I was just like, 'No, just gimme more material!' Like I wanna go in again. And then I did, and we did a chemistry read and I got there and we were all the same height and the same age and they had nothing to worry about." - Sadie Sink in an interview with Teen Vogue

Luckily, Sadie and Caleb had known each other prior to the chemistry read as they were both Broadway performers. The dynamic duo reflects their closeness particularly beautifully in Stranger Things.

Some fans were upset upon hearing this news, judging the casting directors initial opinion and decision that could've cost Stranger Things the most fitting actress to play Max Mayfield.
