In the Netflix series, her character Ellen is married to a deaf man.

Hailed as the new Gilmore Girls, the series focuses on power duo composed of Southern belle caricature Georgia (Brianne Howey) and her brilliant teenage daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry). The two women and Ginny’s brother Austin move into a new town, where Georgia befriends preppy neighbor Ellen Baker, played by Robertson.

Jennifer Robertson On Learning Sign Language For ‘Ginny & Georgia’

Robertson, best known for the role of Jocelyn Schitt on Canadian comedy Schitt’s Creek, had to learn how to sign for the part. Ellen is married to Clint, who is deaf. The role is played by deaf actor Chris Kenopic, who, together with coach Amanda Richer, helped Robertson get ready for the ASL scenes.

“I had a coach, she came and worked with me all the time,” she said on an episode of Netflix’s The Afterparty.

“And I was terrified of doing a bad job, of course, because I wanted to honor the deaf community,” she continued.

She described Kenopic as “very patient.”

"We did some practice sessions, where he would kind of write some stuff down,” Robertson said.

The onscreen pair also encountered a hilarious misunderstanding.

“There was a misunderstanding about ‘glow stick’… I had learned one version of it and then I did ‘glow stick’ for Chris and he just went, ‘Oh no,’” the actress said.

“I said, ‘Is that something else?’” she recalled and laughed.

Sara Waisglass, who plays Ellen and Clint’s daughter Max, also offered her perspective on being able to learn sign language for Ginny & Georgia.

"The ASL was amazing and just a really cool experience so I think we were honored more than anything cause we just got to pick it up and learn about this new world that we had never really gotten to be involved in,” she said.

Robertson then shared that for her it was more difficult than it was for her onscreen kids Max and Marcus, played by Waisglass and Felix Mallard.

“Sara’s young brain, it’s very spongy and moist, took to the sign language quite quickly,” Robertson chimed in.

"For me, it was incredibly difficult,” she added.
