6 He Was Born In Vietnam
Before becoming one of the most saught after makeup artists in Hollywood, Hung Vanngo took an extensive journey to get to where he is today. He was born in Vietnam and moved from the country when he was six years old. After leaving Vietnam, Vanngo lived in a refugee camp for three years. When Hung left the refugee camp, he and his family moved to Canada and went to live and go to school in Calgary. This was where Vanngo's journey to makeup artistry began but he did not always have faith that he would be able to make it as a makeup artist in a place like Calgary. This made his original passion be hair and thought he would eventually become a hairdresser since he knew that would be a more "successful" path, working in a hair salon.
5 He Always Loved Beauty
When Vanngo was younger he was fascinated by faces and consistenly painted them, mainly painting in black and white. He had a passion for the world of fashion from a young age which ultimately lead to his
love for beauty. His love for fashion began his fascination for supermodels and well-known ones.
Though, his original career path was in hairdressing and his family was not the most supportive as his brother is a doctor and wanted Hung to follow in his footsteps. Hung told Fashionista.com, "...in Vietnam, makeup and hair is really a female profession. They didn't think about guys doing those things."
4 He First Went To School For Hair
Even though his family wasn't entirely sold on Hung becomming a hairdresser, his brother was very supportive about his passion for hair and they both figured out their student loans for Hung to attend beauty school in Calgary. Three days after he graduated from high school he attended Marvel College for hairdressing. Hung did not finish hair school due to a lack of room for creativity at the school he was attending. Although he didn't finish hair school, Vanngo got a job in a hair salon in Calgary where they had a makeup station and he began playing with makeup all the time, becomming obsessed with it. Hung's true passion was never really in hair and eventually found what he was actually passionate about stating,
"It was a gift that I could style hair, but I never really loved it. My heart started leaning toward makeup. I started entering hair and makeup competitions, and on the weekends I started reaching out to local agencies and doing photo shoots."
After entering hair and makeup competions and reaching out to local agencies to do photoshoots, he asked a friend of his to be his agent and began doing more freelancing and taking more time off at the salon he was working at. He eventually moved to Toronto upon his agent's request and quit his job cutting hair at the salon.
3 New York Was His Big Break
After living in Toronto, Hung moved to New York in 2006 to "start all over again" and began his career as a full-time makeup artist. He always travelled to New York to purchase makeup and get inspiration. When he moved to New York he signed with a small agency and decided to not do hair at all and just focus on
makeup, which was the first time he had done this in his career. He even decided to keep hush about his past in hair and would just discuss his experience in makeup in order for people to take his makeup artist abilities seriously.
His first editorial big break was "for Shop Etc magazine" and was booked by, the now editor in chief of Women's Health, Amy Keller. Then he got what he describes as his big break in New York, "a shoot for Numéro Tokyo with Helena Christensen" who had seen his work. Christensen love his work from this shoot and ended up booking him that day for three more covers.
2 The Wall Group Agency Hired Him
Hung began working for mainly editorials and fashion where he later began working for The Wall Group. The Wall Group ended up recommending that Vanngo begin working on red carpet makeup and doing more celebrity looks. The Wall Group describes Vanngo's makeup artistry as "combining glamor with an avant-garde aesthetic." Since working with the well-known agency, Hung has worked with some of Hollywood's best photographers like Mert & Marcus, very "prestigious brands" such as Louis Vuittons and A-List celebrities like Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid.
1 He Has His Own YouTube Channel
Although Hung has a very busy schedule working with the most famous celebrities in the world he has also kindly made time to make a YouTube channel. Vanngo's YouTube channel includes a number of makeup tutorials which display his experitise and mezmerizing makeup artistry abilities. Celebrities as well make appearances on his channel and his most consistent client, Selena Gomez, is seen on the channel. A number of other celebrities are seen on his channel as well, as he uses them as his "models" to recreate his iconic makeup looks.
