During the documentary and the subsequent press tour, Selena divulged shocking truths about her diagnosis and how it's changed her life forever. However, the singer fears her diagnosis may throw a wrench in her trying to have a family someday.

Selena has found ways to live with her diagnosis, however, becoming healthy and happy again through her dedication to understanding and adhering to professional treatment of her bipolar disorder.

Why Is Selena Gomez Afraid Of Getting Pregnant?

During a conversation with Rolling Stone, Selena Gomez got honest about the devastating realization that she may not be able to get pregnant someday. The wizards of Waverly place star explained that the two types of medication she's on for her bipolar disorder make.

She detailed an experience of her where she was visiting a friend with the same diagnosis as her own who was having a hard time getting pregnant. After their visit, Selena says she got into her car and broke into tears, thinking about how she will most likely never have the chance to "carry her own children."

According to WebMD, the fetuses of pregnant women taking bipolar medications do face an increased risk of congenital disabilities in the first trimester. Selena fears that the two medications she takes that help manages her bipolar disorder will prevent her from ever having a healthy pregnancy.

After Selena's interview, Today ran an article in which both doctors and mothers who were diagnosed as bipolar prior to their pregnancy's directly contradicted Selena's claims.

Lucy Hunter, a reproductive psychiatrist practicing in New York City, explained that one of the most outdated stigmas surrounding women diagnosed with bipolar disorder is that they cannot have a healthy pregnancy while on medication. "The truth is, bipolar disorder is a mental disorder. A lot of people have mental disorders. It does not preclude you from becoming pregnant, and it does not preclude you from becoming an excellent parent," said Lucy to Today.

Does Selena Gomez Want Children?

Despite the drastic changes in her life caused by her bipolar disorder diagnosis, Selena says she's "tried to make bipolar my friend." She's striving to care for herself, doing dialectic behavior and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Selena's mental health journey has also brought her closer to her mother. The family has always been important to the star, and she plans on having one of her someday.

Selena is dead set on having a family of her own in the future, regardless of her potential inability to birth her own children. "However I'm meant to have [children], I will," said Selena during her November Rolling Stone interview. In fact, the singer hopes to find a husband, start a family, and leave the whole Hollywood thing behind someday.

"Eventually, I'm going to be tired of all of this, so I'm probably just going to devote most of my life to philanthropy before I peace out," said Selena during an August 2022 episode of Giving Back Generation. "I hope to be married and to be a mom."

She's never changed her tune on the subject of being a mother, either. In 2018, Selena told E! News that she'll either be the world's best or worst mother because she plans to protect her kids "like no one's business."

When Does Selena Gomez Want To Have Children?

The singer wants to find someone she can settle down with, as well, before starting a family. Despite her very public previous relationships, Selena has been single for quite some time now. She has high expectations for her potential love match, as she should, but those expectations may have gotten even higher after starring in Only Murders In The Building with Martin Short and Steve Martin.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2022, Selena explained that working with the two men has changed her standard for dating. "Being around two adult gentlemen — because that's what they are, they are very sweet and kind and hilarious and inappropriate sometimes, and it's the best — I just learned so much," said the Same Old Love singer. "And my expectation for a man, to be honest, or any human, is to be as decent as these two human beings are."

Selena said what's different about her outlook on relationships this time around is that she no longer tolerates discomfort in her life. "[My past has] allowed me to develop a character where I don't tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect," said Selena. Here's hoping that 2023 brings Selena a comedic king with a heart of gold.
