Shawn Mendes recently became the latest celeb to take part in Vanity Fair's lie detector test. In a YouTube video uploaded to the magazine's channel, Mendes surprised fans with the revelations that he thinks Taylor Swift's boyfriend looks "like a villain" and that Harry Styles doesn't follow him back on Instagram.

But the star also found himself in hot water when the interviewer brought up the fanbase of K-pop band BTS. They commented on how the name chosen by Mendes's own fanbase bears similarity to that of BTS, being "Mendes Army" and simply "Army," respectively. Mendes responded, "Well, they obviously stole that from us," before quickly backtracking and saying, "That was a joke, BTS Army. We're allies, you know. I like to think we're allies."

However, some fans of the K-pop group didn't take Mendes's comments too lightly. One Twitter user replied to a clip of Mendes's interview, writing, "the man was terrified for his life he went ahead & lied by saying we're allies ... since WHEN?" While another argued that BTS fans had actually coined the fanbase name first. They tweeted, "ok but i did sum research and bts is the first one to name fans army (2013) and mendes army was formed (2014)". While another clarified that BTS fans actually go by the acronym, A.R.M.Y., rather than "BTS Army."

Others objected specifically to being called "allies" with Mendes's fanbase. One tweeted, "No we're not allies gtfo shawn," and another wrote, "allies? the only time armys tallk about shawn is how fruity his a** looks," in reference to the rumors surrounding the "Stitches" singer's sexuality.

Some Twitter users picked up on how speedily the star retreated from his accusation that fans of the K-pop band had stolen his fanbase's name. One wrote, "Shawn looked like he was going to take a step, then realized what he was doing and took two steps back. Yeah that's what we call the power of the ARMY. No one can stand against us or BTS." And another joked that Mendes was prompted to compliment the band because he was worried about provoking their fandom. They observed, "There was a moment when his life flashed before his eyes."

But a few fans also felt sorry for the "Treat You Better" songwriter. One wrote, "There probably wasn't any ill will. I just found his reaction afterwards funny." And another thought that Mendes had played it off well, tweeting, "He's actually too sweet and kind. The way he immediately clarified that it was a joke. just to be respectful. He's one of the sweetest celebrities out there including BTS."
