Jon Batiste, Silk Sonic And Olivia Rodrigo Win The Big Awards

This year's Grammys was praised for being one of the most open fields in years, with the so-called big four categories expanded to include 10 nominees each.

35-year-old's Batiste's album, "We Are", and the title track were written in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The themes of intergenerational wisdom and positivity were a favorite this year as the soul singer earned 11 nominations in 2022. His award may come as a surprise as the album only charted at 86 in the US and failed to make an impact internationally.

Silk Sonic, a project between Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak, won for their soulful ballad "Leave The Door Open" echoes the soul sounds of the 70s with a wink to modern R&B.

"We are really trying our hardest to remain humble at this point," said Paak as the duo walked on stage to collect their award, "but in the industry, we call that 'a clean sweep'."

Olivia Rodrigo's stellar year of international success saw her win best new artist, best pop solo performance and best pop album. The 19-year-old dedicated the award to her parents.

"I want to thank my mom for being supportive of all of my dreams, no matter how crazy; and I want to thank my mom and my dad for being equally as proud of me for winning a Grammy as they were when I learned how to do a back walkover."

Ceremony Described As Concert With Awards

The 64 annual awards ceremony was held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, after a three-month delay due to the Covid-19 surge. For the first 25 minutes, the show shunned prizes to show back-to-back performances of some of the world's biggest artists.

BTS tore the roof off the MGM Grand with a heist-themed performance of their pop smash Butter and Lady Gaga performed "Love For Sale" and "Do I Love You", as she paid tribute to Tony Bennett, who couldn't attend the ceremony for health reasons.

At the end of the performance, Gaga was moved to tears. "I love you, Tony," she said into the mic. "We miss you."

Unlike other recent awards shows, the ceremony went away without a hitch or controversy.

"We're going to be dancing, we're going to be singing, we're going to be keeping people's names out of our mouths," presenter Trevor Noah said, one of the few mentions of the recent Academy Awards slapping controversy.
