The upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie’s poster has already been parodied, and the results are truly disturbing.
In case you haven’t already heard, they’re making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Yes, that blue rodent that runs really fast around some bald scientist is getting a full, feature-length film that debuts next year.
Leaving aside the obvious question of “why now?” when Sonic’s popularity is at an all-time low, Paramount Pictures released a series of advertising posters that give us an idea of what we’re in store for.
The first is a silhouette of Sonic with some inspirational words. The next shows Sonic lounging on the back of actor James Marsden’s car (for reasons that remain incredibly opaque), while a third just have Sonic’s hairy legs looking out over the Golden Gate Bridge.
We’ll get back to those hairy legs in a second. But for now, we’ll focus on what has been viewed as the main piece of advertising, which is the silhouette poster.
Naturally, with this being the internet, people aren’t going to leave a strange new thing like a Sonic major motion picture alone. They’re going to take it and morph into things that a marketing exec could never dream of.
Some of them are cute little takes on how Pikachu got to the whole CG slash live-action genre first with Detective Pikachu.
While others are wondering just what Sonic’s face will look like when it comes out of the shadows. What they imagine is mostly terrifying.
Moving on to the car poster, we see that people chose to take this opportunity to once again poke fun at how Sonic is actually slow for the first time in his life, arriving after Pikachu had already stolen the CG limelight.
One of the things that the internet really latched onto was how the classic Sonic cartoon character seems to only share a general resemblance with the film version. Sure, the back spikes and sneakers are still there, but Sonic has gotten oddly… buff.
Here’s one that imagines Sonic’s strangely developed glutes.
While here’s another that hearkens back to the good old days when Sonic just had white tubes for legs.
Sonic the Hedgehog hits theatres in November of next year. By then we’re sure to have even crazier posters to parody, so stay tuned.
