Squirrel Momma Builds Nest For Impending Baby In Rescuer’s Drawer

via Bored Panda

A squirrel momma who was rescued as a baby decided to build a nest in her rescuer’s drawer to give birth to her baby.

A little over two years ago, Simone Serfontein was walking home when she spotted a little baby squirrel at the base of a tree. She couldn’t have been more than a few days old, and she was calling for her mother who was nowhere to be found.

Cold and abandoned, Serfontein took pity on the creature that was so young she hadn’t even grown her fur yet. She took her home and raised her, feeding her from a bottle, and teaching her how to be a good squirrel in a human world.

“Raising a Squirrel is definitely not an easy task,” Simone admits in an interview with Bored Panda. “For the first few weeks I fed her every hour, even at night I normally set my alarm to feed her and help her with the ‘bathroom situation’.”

She named her little charge Dingetjie. For the first three months, Dingetjie never left Serfontein’s side. She’d even sleep with her in bed even after Serfontein went to the trouble of constructing a squirrel apartment out of an old shoebox and blankets.

To this day, Dingetjie still only wants to sleep with her mommy.

Months later, Serfontein decided to try and release Dingetjie back into the wild. But it didn’t quite take--Dingetjie just kept coming back. She’d spend all day outdoors doing her squirrel thing, but every evening she’d return to spend the night in bed with her mom.

One day, Dingetjie came back home with a surprise: she was pregnant.

Of course, telling that your outdoor pet squirrel is preggers isn’t as easy as taking a pregnancy test, but there was at least one telltale sign with Dingetjie. She built a nest in an old, unused drawer using tissue paper she’d collected from around the house. When the big day came, Serfontein was there to help her give birth.

Unfortunately, Dingetjie’s first child was stillborn. Her second died a few months later. But her third child was healthy enough to survive with a little extra bottle feeding from Serfontein.

Now Serfontein, Dingetjie, and little baby Mistie all live together as one big happy squirrel family.
