He Must Become Something Else

Stephen Amell was born in 1981 in Toronto. He began acting in 2004 making several television appearances on shows such as The Vampire Diaries and Hung.

In 2012, Amell was cast as Oliver Queen otherwise known as the Green Arrow. The character was created in 1941 by Mort Weisinger and George Papp. Justin Hartley previously portrayed the character during the later seasons of Smallville.

Arrow premiered in October 2012 on CW and was a massive success for the network. The show ultimately lasted eight seasons which is impressive enough. But the show also kick-started a universe. The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and now Batwoman all followed in Arrow's footsteps. Amell told EW, "I'm so proud of Grant [Gustin] and Melissa [Benoist], and I really like that Caity [Lotz] has grown into the leader she has. I'm pumped for Ruby [Rose]. It's great [that] you do a show and it births other shows."

IGN described Amell's performance as "...[displaying] the right blend of intensity and haunted guilt to portray a man readjusting to the real world and struggling to atone for his past mistakes."

In 2019, it was announced the eighth season of Arrow would be the last. Amell told EW, "I started that show dating a girl and I'm walking away from the show as a husband and a father, and a way better actor. I don't mean for that to sound ostentatious, but I've got reps now. I'm very proud of how hard I've worked on being a good actor...I feel like walking away from the show, for me, there's no room that I can't go into, and there's no scenario where I will be intimidated because I've worked nonstop for eight years. And I love it."

Green Arrow died during Crisis on Infinite Earths, the most recent crossover of the all of the CW superhero shows. He died at the end of part one only to return as the Spectre. In part four, the Spectre defeated the Anti-Monitor and restored the multiverse which had been destroyed in part three. The final two episodes of Arrow served as a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff starring Kat McNamara as a new Green Arrow and the finale serving as a memorial featuring several returning guest stars.

Amell discussed his decision to end the show at length with Michael Rosenbaum on the podcast Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum. Notably, Amell suffered a panic attack during the initial interview and had to return to finish it later. He also revealed that he wanted the show to end with season seven which is when his contract expired. He agreed to do a considerably shorter season eight that would lead to his death during the crossover.

In 2016, Amell and his cousin Robbie Amell began fundraising for a movie titled Code 8. Through IndieGoGo, the film raised $3.4 million and was released in December 2019. Stephen Amell starred in and executive produced the film.

Speech & Debate

Cassandra Jean Amell is an actress and model. She made appearances on shows such as Mad Men and One Tree Hill. Stephen Amell and Cassandra Jean Amell married in 2012; the two have a daughter together who was born in 2013. Cassandra Jean Amell would eventually appear as Nora Fries, wife of the villainous Mr. Freeze, during one of the CW's yearly superhero crossovers.

A trailer was recently put on social media for a new short film called Speech & Debate. The shorts Stephen Amell and Aisha Tyler and is directed by Cassandra Jean Amell. The plot is the president of the art department of a high school, played by Tyler, conflicting with the debate coach played by Stephen Amell who she believes is cheating.  The trailer shows of a much funnier side of Stephen Amell.

On Arrow, Oliver Queen is very stoic and serious. While he does occasionally get some humorous lines, they are few and far between. That show's humor mostly comes from Emily Bett Rickard's Felicity Smoak.

Stephen Amell, even just judging from the trailer, gives a hilarious performance which he credits to his wife. Stephen Amell on Twitter said, "Making Speech & Debate was an absolute blast. Really proud of [Cassandra Jean Amell] -- she made me seem much funnier than I actually am."

There is no current release date for the short film. Stephen Amell's next project is Heels, a drama set in the world of independent professional wrestling. Cassandra Jean Amell can currently be seen as a recurring guest star on Roswell, New Mexico.
