Stranger Things Season 4 Is Officially Happening (& Here’s What You Need To Know)

You read that right- Netflix has finally confirmed that Stranger Things season four is happening- and here’s what you need to know about it.

Season three of the hit show only debuted this past Fourth of July weekend. But, given that Stranger Things is more popular than ever, it’s not surprising Netflix has already confirmed season four is happening. As of now, the streaming giant has not released when the new season will air. But it has confirmed that co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer will be leading the new season. The creative duo has signed a deal with Netflix that gives them a multi-million dollar budget to produce movies and TV shows.

Netflix released a 35-second video announcing Stranger Things fourth season. The clip hinted the show will be moving beyond the tiny town of Hawkins, as the last few seconds tease the line “We’re Not in Hawkins Anymore.”

The Duffer brothers previously hinted at this in the summer. “I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins,” Matt told EW in July.

Ross said that, as of now, they only have a rough outline of what the next season’s plotline will look like. “We don’t know a lot, but we do know a lot of the big broad strokes,” Ross explained. “At the end of season two, we knew about Billy. We knew that the Russians were going to come in. We didn’t know the mall and stuff, but again, we know these big broad strokes. That’s sort of where we are in season four."

Unfortunately, many media outlets are reporting that the next season won’t be available for several years. Vulture predicts the earliest it will debut is 2021. In fact, it appears the new season hasn’t even started filming, so any hopes of it dropping before 2021 seem slim.

On the bright side, however, Netflix has been pretty consistent when it comes to dropping the seasons. The first debuted in July 2016, while the second was available in October 2017. Fans had to wait a bit longer to see the third season (July 2019, to be exact) and it seems like it’ll be the same the fourth time around. But it also doesn’t seem like this is the final season, either. So, we still have a lot of Stranger Things ahead of us in our future.
