If your goal is to be successful and happy, you may want to consider adopting a pet. A new study shows that owning a pet can increase your chances of getting your dream job, finding a spouse and having children.

Researchers have found that people over 55 with cats or dogs were twice as likely to say they have enjoyed a happy and successful life. According to the poll, which surveyed 1,000 dog and cat owners, and 1,000 adults without a pet, those who had a pet made £4,000 more a year and were more likely to be college graduates.

Those without pets, however, were more likely to retire earlier — 46 percent versus 35 percent — and to have paid off their mortgage — 69 percent compared to 60 percent.

Given that pet owners engage in twice as much exercise than those who don’t have animals, nine out of ten pet owners believe their pet contributes to their health and wellbeing. Pet owners increase their heart-rate five times a week compared to three times a week for non-pet owners.

The study, conducted by OnePoll.com, also shows that pet owners are more likely to travel to their dream destination and volunteer for charitable organizations. In addition, pets are shown to bring more laughter to six in ten older pet owners, while 16 percent say that if they didn’t own a pet, they would rarely speak to anyone.

Fifty percent of those polled look forward to arriving home to greet their pets, and another 31 percent say that owning a dog or cat gives their life purpose. According to psychologist and author, Corinne Sweet, “The psychological and emotional benefits of pet ownership are well-known among mental health professionals.”

“Having a close bond with a domestic animal can boost ‘feel good’ biochemicals such as endorphins and oxytocin; which can make owners feel more relaxed, calmer and happier at home,” she added. “The act of stroking a pet can lower high blood pressure, and being greeted or comforted by a pet can increase general emotional well-being. "Owners may also talk to their furry friends and gain a friendly, comforting ear and a warm welcome when they are feeling unwell, sad or lonely.”

Sweet said that the benefits of owning a pet also include increased cardiovascular exercise for dog owners, as well as more light housework for dog and cat owners.
