Brazilian tattoo artist Helen Fernandes has become popular due to her child-like art style, and fans of her work follow her journey closely. While she never saw herself becoming a tattoo artist, Fernandes has always enjoyed drawing and art. With no formal training, she was able to create a business and make people smile.
In our current digital age, it’s much easier to find art and artists whose work you love. Every artist is different, and not everyone will love their pieces equally. However, art speaks and relates differently with different people, so it doesn’t matter that something is not universally loved. Fernandes’ style is quite unique and distinct, and it resonates with those who find the humor or adorableness in them. What’s a better way to show your support for your favorite artists than inking their work permanently into your skin?

Fernandes originally went to school for mechanical engineering, so her career as a tattoo artist was not planned at all. The field didn’t make her happy but drawing and art did. It all started when her fiancé enjoyed a doodle of a bat with pointy teeth that she drew for him, and he asked her to ink it into his skin. Her cute and fun style of drawing got her friend jealous of her fiancé’s tattoos, so she started to tattoo people in her close circles too. Eventually, her work was discovered by other people, and her inking business took off.
Her Instagram page dedicated to her art, Malfeitona (Portuguese for “badly done), is how her fans keep up-to-date with her latest creations. Her account has over 70,000 followers, and she features her drawings on more than just other people’s skin. Some of her pieces have been featured in tattoo publications, and she now teaches art classes as an illustrator.
Fernandes feared that she wouldn’t be able to do art as a job because she grew up believing the field was only for rich people who have connections. However, her love for drawing, her unique style, and her passion for creating the surreal has resonated with people around the world, and that’s what truly matters in the world of art.
