The novel coronavirus pandemic means that social distancing is “in” and jam-packed spaces are “out.” Too much contact with too many folks is not just bad corona juju— it’s also super against the guidelines set by the Center For Disease Control. But there is one man who is living his single life like it’s 2019, and he is not afraid to kiss a whole lot of women: Matt James.

As this year’s star of The BachelorMatt is one of the few guys in the world who is able to date with total COVID-19 safety. ABC has thrown him in quarantine at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort with about thirty women, all of whom have tested negative for the virus. And Matt has been smooching the ladies nonstop.

The only catch? Fans don’t agree with his “technique.”

Matt’s Big Kissing Error

Over the course of the first seven episodes, Matt has not been afraid to plant a kiss or two on the lips of pretty much every gal he’s had a conversation with. While they say that “practice makes perfect”— and boy has Matt practiced! —it seems that the star of Bachelor Nation is still making a relatively basic mistake.

But what’s impeding our lead from using good technique? A lack of etiquette. Matt kisses with his eyes open.

The good news for our leading guy is that there’s a good chance that the women didn’t notice his faux pas in the moment. After all, the contestants tend to kiss with their eyes closed, as most people do. This means they probably never noticed Matt’s mid-kiss stare, nor were they likely thrown off by his lack of smooching etiquette.

Fans Open Matt’s Eyes To His Mistake

Perhaps the ladies didn’t notice that they were making out with an open-eyed man, but viewers back home definitely saw. And fans have not hesitated to educate Matt on the error of his ways.

On Valentine’s Day, Matt commemorated the holiday by sharing a photo of himself kissing a bouquet of roses to his newsfeed. His eyes were (thankfully) closed. His followers decided to take the picture as a teachable moment... and swarmed his comments section with tips for improvement.

“So you can kiss those with your eyes closed,” asked one doubtful fan. Another one added, “Your eyes are closed and that’s personal growth.”

But will Matt be able to take what he did with the flowers and apply it to his relationships?

Tune into ABC on Monday nights to find out.
