Ever since the premiere of The Blended Bunch on TLC, we knew that the show would be a totally different kind of television experience. After years of enduring the Duggar family and their scandals, this new program shows a large family that prioritizes mental health and communication.

In other words: we finally get to see a big family dive into some of the challenges of modern parenting. And parents Erica and Spencer Shermwell are not afraid to get real about the nitty-gritty parts of raising kids.

The latest sneak peek of The Blended Bunch actually shows a surprisingly candid sit down conversation in which the couple explains the “Birds and the Bees” to their pre-teen children. And fans are in love.

A Modern Approach To Parenting

Spencer and Erica know that sexual education is important, so they decided to fill their kids in on their personal views about intimacy. But just because the couple wants their children to be prepared with the information, doesn’t mean that the conversation itself was an easy one.

Spencer starts off The Talk by sitting down two of his sons and trying to explain the importance of intimacy in marriage. The boys immediately try to wriggle their way out of the convo, demanding a TV in exchange for their attention.

Erica’s chat with her daughter goes a bit more smoothly. Well, until the pre-teen covers her ears and insists that she doesn’t want to hear about “the s word.”

Ah! The joys of parenthood.

Erica and Spencer later admit that the sit-downs were challenging. “That was painful,” confessed the mama bear afterwards.

However, it was also clear that the chats paid off. One of the most tender moments of the whole scene was when Erica’s daughter admitted how important it was for her to learn about intimacy from her mom. “I wouldn’t know if you didn’t tell me,“ the pre-teen said.

That's the charm of The Blended Bunch. Spencer and Erica are way too sincere to make parenthood look easy, but their honesty allows viewers a rare glimpse at modern family life. As a result, fans will be able to connect with them in a totally real way.

“Looks like it’s going to be a cute show,” wrote one fan, “I can’t wait to watch.”
