As one of the most popular actors on the face of the planet, Brad Pitt is no stranger to starring in hit films and earning rave reviews for his performance. He has no shortage of amazing movies, but despite his success, even he isn’t immune from taking part in a project that turns into a box office flop.

Animated films are tricky to make, and one wrong move can cause huge problems for any major project. DreamWorks thought they had a potential hit on their hands, but they would soon learn a valuable lesson after losing millions of dollars.

Let’s take a look back at the Brad Pitt film that lost over $100 million.

‘Sinbad’ Had A Star-Studded Cast

Animated movies with massive budgets are always a huge roll of the dice, as a studio genuinely has no idea how things will play out at the box office. To boost their confidence and help the film’s chances, casting huge names in primary roles can be an effective strategy. This is the tactic that DreamWorks used when they were putting together the film Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas.

Brad Pitt was already a huge star when he was cast as the lead character in the film, and his name alone should have gotten people interested in seeing what this movie had to offer. Pitt wasn’t exactly known for his voice acting abilities, but the studio clearly saw him as being a perfect fit for the character. Not only was Pitt starring in the film, but the rest of the roles were filled with exceptionally talented performers.

Among the other notable names taking part in Sinbad were Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Joseph Fiennes. A number of other talented voice performers were also tabbed to voice characters, including the legendary Jim Cummings, who has voiced character like Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and the Tasmanian Devil.

With Brad Pitt leading an incredible cast, there was reason to believe that this film had a fighting chance at the box office. As the studio quickly learned, a great cast can only take a movie so far.

It Turned Into A Disaster

Released back in 2003, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas came nowhere close to doing the type of business that the studio was hoping for. Now, it should be noted that this was the same year that Finding Nemo dominated theaters, but there was a two-month gap between the release of each film, meaning that Sinbad should have been able to find a place at the box office.

As is stands now, Sinbad is currently sporting a 45% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The fan score is at a paltry 56%, but we will touch on that more in a bit. Clearly, the reviews for the film did it no favors, especially when compared to the monumental amount of praise that Finding Nemo received for Disney and Pixar.

At the box office, the film was unable to make much headway with large audiences. With a reported budget of $60 million (not including marketing costs), the flick was only able to pull down $80 million at the global box office, which was a huge disappointment for the studio.

According to Looper, the film lost $125 million overall, which was a huge blow to the studio. Sure, they had plenty of hits to their name, but losing $125 million was a crushing blow.

It Has A Cult Following

So, after all these years and after its notorious failure, where does Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas stand now? Well, that depends on who you ask. Many people have completely forgotten about this movie, while others will bang the drum that it is one of the most slept on animated movies ever made.

Is it a cult classic? Not exactly. It does, however, have a following to this very day, which makes up for its lackluster audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s easy for movies, especially notorious bombs, to be completely forgotten about, but there seems to be a vocal group of people who feel that this film deserved a much better fate.

Even though this was a huge missed opportunity for DreamWorks, the studio would eventually turn things around and find success with other projects. The animation game is a tough one, but the company did build a unique legacy during its most popular era. It’s just a shame that Sinbad was as big of a disaster as it was back in 2003.
